This race was the first Pac-8 outdoor track event Pre ran for Oregon. He is a Freshman and Kardong is in his Junior year at Stanford. Photo from web site europa.com/~bence/pre/fr.htm
Info below quoted from www.donkardong.com/moreinfo.htm :
Don Kardong began running during his sophomore year of high school as a way of staying in shape for basketball. He ran competitively the sophomore, junior and senior years, in both cross country and track, for Seattle Prep. He finished 2nd in the Washington State Cross Country Meet, 1966, where the team tied for the championship. Best track times included a 1:58 half-mile, 4:30 mile, and 9:24 two-mile (indoors).
Kardong ran four years of cross country and three years of track at Stanford, missing one season of eligibility (1969) while attending Stanford-in-Britain. He was a member of Stanford's second place NCAA Cross Country team in 1968 at Van Cortlandt Park. Finished 4th (13:28) in the NCAA 3-mile in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1970. Finished 2nd behind Steve Prefontaine in the 1971 PAC-8 3-Mile in 13:19.8. Kardong is the Stanford record holder at two miles, three miles and six miles, and had a best mile time in college of 4:03.2. Coached by Marshall Clark while at Stanford.
After graduating, Kardong ran a first marathon of 2:18:06 (February, 1972), and went on to compete in the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon and 10,000 meters, finishing 6th in both events. In 1974, he ran a 3-mile in 12:57.6 in Eugene, Oregon, becoming the 5th fastest American 3-miler of all time. Also in 1974, he ran a personal record of 4:01.9 in the mile. In 1975, Kardong was a member of the U.S. Track and Field Delegation to the People's Republic of China. In 1976, he competed in the IAAF Cross Country Championships in Chepstow, Wales.
On May 22, 1976, Kardong finished 3rd in the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon (2:13:54), and was 4th in the U.S. Olympic Trials 5000 meters a month later. He finished 4th in the Olympic Marathon in Montreal (7/31/76), running a personal best of 2:11:16, missing the bronze medal by 3 seconds. He was selected "Road Runner of the Year" by the Road Runners Club of America in 1976.

The Mysore Palace is an amazing site to see in Mysore, Karnataka, India. It is the official residence of the Wodeyars. former royal family of Mysore. The Palace is lit up during the weekend and various special occasions. Architectural, it is fantastic. Along with not being able to wear shoes in the Palace, you also can not take pictures inside either!

My Jeans Purse - 2 of 3 photos
Well, I made a jeans bag for myself. It has a long strap (recycled jeans waistband, an upcycled web belt, and 2 D rings) and its got lots and lots of deep pockets. I am one of those who always has the inner thighs wear out of my still newish - looking jeans. They usually get cut up for scraps but this time I made this for myself.
I used what I had on hand and my only mistake was in embroidering with acrylic and NOT wool yarn. Acrylic yarn is bright and shiny but it frays and doesn't hold up as well. I hope a couple bottles of "Fray Check" applied to all red and orange yarn will keep the stitches from wearing out.
The embroidery was brutal on my hands! I did NOT cut away all the flat felled jean seams, and it was a nightmare to continually sew/embroider through such heavy cotton denim. I do LOVe the way this bag came out though. It doesn't need a clasp, because it just hangs perfectly from my shoulder w/o gaping.
I took the legs and made pockets, and turned the back around so the original existing flat back pockets were inside. There are so many nice deep pockets, I actually had to memorise where I keep everything. Its the best bag I ever had, and I have been making bags since the 1970s in every kind of technique and material.
Got my keys hanging from a caribeaner. Because they would get lost inside!
Its a big bag, and I can probably go away on a 4 day trip with this bag! :-)
I cannot stress enough-- it was really tough on my hands to hand embroider through so many layers and I used big industrial sail maker needles and pliers to pull the needle through. But I get great compliments on this bag where ever I go.

Lots of Uploads
I can't believe how much I uploaded this month...
I uploaded a decent amount, but the files are much larger as they are shot RAW and processed in 16bit mode resulting in many JPEG images being almost 10MB in size (some are actually over that and require me to resize or scale them back to allow Flickr to accept them).
I can't believe I almost uploaded 2Gbytes of images in one month, crap... I have issues.

Towards a philosophy of the end of history
Editing Elliot Tiber
Elliot Tiber (born 1935) was instrumental in arranging for the Woodstock Festival in 1969. The same year he took part to the Stonewall riots, an important event for the gay rights movement.
In 2007 he wrote Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, a Concert and a Life. The book was adapted into a movie by Ang Lee.
I met him in June 2009 at the Biografilm Festival in Bologna.
Also on Wikimedia Commons. Used on PC Fastlane.

"Garden Retreat" by Dale Gehrman

Oil on Canvas by Dale Gehrman.
Limited edition numbered prints of Dale's work, including "Garden Retreat" were once available thru the Prints and Persspectives website, but the site has not been updated in a long time and e-mails that I sent asking about his work in 2012 went unanswered.
From time to time, original copies of his work as well as framed copies of his prints show up on E-Bay. But buyer beware: there are sites that sell posters of his work but the quality of those images is often very poor. Only purchase a print of his work if the seller says it is a limited edition and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Original paintings will usually have many photos of the painting, either framed or unframed with the E-Bay listing.
"We Are All Artists..."
... Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not.
Some of us draw. Some write. Some make music, whether they compose it from what they hear in their head, or they mix it from what they like. Some sculpt, or use welding torches, rivet guns, or smelting crucibles.
A lot of us take photos, or create their illustrations in digital format. Some work with 3D modeling.
Some take up the needle and thread, whether they modify existing patterns, or make their own.
Some take joy in breaking out the brush, foundation, eyeliner, lipstick, and nail polish, and work to achieve their ideal vision of beauty and style. Some even use their own bodies as their canvas.
In any case... We Are All Artists.
(Here's A Story I Wrote Right This Moment: Long ago and far away, there was a girl named Julie Anne. She felt like she was an outsider for so long, that people didn't truly understand her [Whether or not it was because she was afraid to show as much of herself to people around her, even to her closest friends and family.], so she chose to go through life, letting people think she was aloof or anti-social. For a while, she thought she was okay with that, but was just another lie.
So, she went through the motions of a daily life, and a normal job, and hobbies to give her a sense of purpose, wandering from place to place, looking for somewhere where she wouldn't feel like an outcast.
In her dreams, she's pouring out her heart, and confessing her feelings to someone, truly wishing "...I could find a place where I feel I'm at home."
And then, in that dream, the person she's talking to looks her in the eyes, and says, with all the sincerity in the world, "Julie.... You are home."
... And then Julie Anne cried such deep, cleaning tears of happiness....
Someday, somewhere, somehow - That dream will become a reality, no matter how long it takes, or how hard the road may be.)

Dave Adler | aperture Magazine | aperture foundation | PRISON “ESCAPIST PHOTOGRAPHS”
All over the United States, prison inmates are making photographic portraits of other inmates, posed against painted backdrops—also made by inmates—featuring fantasy scenes of life outside the prison walls. The practice is thus a collaboration by, for, and about prisoners. While some states and wardens discourage such photographs (perhaps to be tougher on the inmates), others encourage them as a peaceful means of self-expression. Though these photographs are scarcely known in what the prisoners call the “free world,” the system is national in scope. There are more than two million people incarcerated in the United States, and virtually every major penitentiary—both state and federal—has its own painted backdrop created by inmates for this use.
The backdrops typically consist of a large painting on canvas, although some are painted directly on cinderblock walls (a few of these are particularly delicate, adding to the sense of tension in the images). Natural themes are common—beaches, waterfalls, rainbows—as are city skylines. There are regional touches: Western motifs, Mexican murals, even elements of Colonial New England. Many are abstract: wardens review every backdrop for signs of gang symbols, and abstract paintings are seen as more likely to be “clean.”
The inmates have a variety of objectives with these images: to entertain; to pretend to be somewhere else; to escape their incarceration, at least visually. The portraits are often sent to friends and relatives—in an environment without email access, this is a favored mode of making contact with the outside world. But while the idea may be to present a pretty or lighthearted picture, in reality the photographs often convey exactly the opposite sense. The portraits and backdrops defy the expectations of a non-prison audience, and there is a complete lack of sensationalism in the images: these are not the angry, dangerous hoods we know from rap music and the entertainment industry. Here the inmates are smiling self-consciously, or nearly affectless.
I refer to this photography subculture as “The Age of Innocence.” The portraits and backdrops are visually innocent, and the letters I receive from prisoners often (though not always) contain protestations of innocence, about long-forgotten and poorly investigated crimes. I have been documenting this work for several years now, together with an inmates’-rights activist. What we have discovered is that prisoners, despite the direness of their situation, have been able to create a kind of art system for themselves, with its own processes and institutions. And for them, everyone of these photographs is charged with meanings that would be impossible in portraits from the “free world.”

I saw this giant overpass one day, and it very much reminded me of one of the opening scenes in "Eraserhead" when Henry walks "into" a very large wall himself, and enters the "industrial zone." This is a playful take on that scene.
For the lighting buffs, this was just one big softbox high and to camera left triggered via RF602. I think there were about 1 second exposures, I can't quite remember. I don't know, something just didn't click this night. It certainly wasn't the model, she was amazing.

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site welcomes new artist installation Visions of the Free World by David Adler to its growing art program and continues to feature many of its visitors’ favorite installations from previous years. In 2013 there will be eight artist installations on view during all public hours, including the new installation by Adler. Artists are chosen for their ability to address Eastern State’s primary themes—including issues of crime and justice, architectural history, and the site’s fascinating past—with a memorable, thought-provoking approach.
Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers.
Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.
Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone.
ESP has also been the set to many films. Eastern State’s arched cellblocks and central rotunda are transformed into a mental institution in the movie 12 Monkeys, with Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis.
"Visions of the Free World" is on display through November 30, 2013.
