Picnik, the ultimate photo editing site that is adored all over this globe is shutting down on April 19th. Unless we do something about it. Please, whether you've ever used it or not, or whether you're an avid photographer, or just stumbled onto this petition... PLEASE take the time to sign it. We WILL stop Picnik from shutting down.

Let's get #savingpicnik trending on Twitter!

Like "Saving Picnik" on Facebook: www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Saving-Picnik/281715701881836

That's why I signed a petition to Jonathan Sposato, CEO of Picnik.com, which says:

"Don't shut down Picnik! It's the best photo editing site out there, especially for amateurs, and many will be lost without it! Picnik corporates, PLEASE don't shut down!"

Pasting from the UrbDeZine link:

When asked to talk about her imaginary cartography, she said: “My intricate pen and watercolor drawings are inspired by the visual language of maps, as well as the fractal similarity that cities share with biological processes such as the patterns of cells and neurons. I invent each place as I draw, thinking about clustering of neighborhoods, patterns of roads and the individual selective memory that an inhabitant would use to navigate their city. The physical materials also influence each work; the topography of watercolor paper, the force of gravity on ink, or the tensile limitations of paper all structure my drawings in the same way that a landscape influences urban growth.”

Emily Garfield creates intricate maps of imaginary places that explore the origins of cities and the function of maps themselves. She received her BA in Visual Arts from Brown University, where she also pursued studies in the brain’s response to art and aesthetic beauty through the Cognitive Science department. She has participated in exhibitions throughout the greater Boston area as well as New York and Philadelphia. Her work is in the collection of the Kamm Teapot Foundation as well as numerous private collections. She was kind enough to let us steal her bio from her website.

Quoting from the Artisan's Asylum First Winter Open Studios! Facebook event page:

Yes, Artisan’s Asylum is holding its first Winter Open Studios on Saturday December 1st, from noon to 5PM. It’s FREE, open to the public, and families are welcome; so come join the fun, and tell your friends that this is a chance to see what everyone's talking about.

More than twenty makers, crafters, jewelers, engineers and artists will participate. Tour group workshops and individual studios, observe demonstrations, purchase unique artworks and talk to who made them. Enjoy dragons, robots, collages, and interactive computer-generated music installations. Watch welders and glassworkers first-hand, and see jewelry being made on a 3D printer.

Artisan’s Asylum is now one of the largest collaborative maker/art/hacker spaces in the USA, with robust shop facilities for making almost anything you can dream up. Classes range over media including woodworking, metalworking, electronics, robotics, silk-screening and more. You can even sign up for one when you visit this event.

For more information, visit Artisan's Asylum's website, as well as on Facebook and Twitter. And there is also, of course, a Flickr account and Flickr group.

I also have other photos of Artisan's Asylum, many related to SYBS: Somerville Youth Build and Sail, a project where we are building Optimist sailboats with our kids, and they will in turn learn to sail in them on the Mystic River.

A somewhat Chinese dragon
dragon image
date: 2012

materials: red sculpture clay, oxide finishes, traces of gold pigment

dimensions:27.2/37.0/42.7 cm h/w/d inclusive of base.

This was made as a gift to a good friend, born in a Dragon year, on the occasion of a significant birthday.

It is a somewhat Chinese dragon because it is thickish in the body and not snake-like, and relatively bulky and angular compared to classical images. The point of departure for this, and from the look of it a great many Chinese dragon images, is the Nine Dragons Handscroll, an extraordinary brush-and-ink work by Chen Rong, dated 1244.

The most famous temple in Osaka--established by Shotoku Taishi. Prince Shotuku established Shitenno-ji after bringing Buddhism to the forefront of Japanese religion in 593. This makes Shitenno-ji the oldest state temple in Japan. Although Shotoku's aunt, Empress Suiko, ordered the temple to be built, it was Shotoku's baby. Though most of the original structures were destroyed during the Onin War and Battle of Osaka, the grounds still remains similar to the original in terms of lay-out.

I've had a few funny looks recently as I've been collecting this printer spool which find itself spread around uni. There's an ancient printer in particular up on the 5th floor, which is rather temperamental. Every so often it will pump out a sheet of this code. I presume its the HEX or ASCII of the image it was supposed to print, but it produces some really nice looking graphics.

As interesting as it is, its not ideal the day before a hand-in...

The Smoking Gun Photo
change background image
Bill, please find attached my "Smoking Gun Photo" from 1989.

This was a photo which I took during a sailboat race on the Great Salt Lake
of the Kennecott copper smelter in Magna, UT.

This photo received national coverage, is posted in many EPA offices know as
the "Smoking Gun" image, and was presented to the Governor of the State of
Utah, along with the Kennecott/Rio Tinto Zinc financials, which showed that
this company was earning over M a day, running their processes in this
manner.

While this is the picture of many of the "runaway" smelter processes, it
shows what happens at many smelters that have marginal pollution controls,
especially in third world countries.

Kennecott/RTZ ended up spending over b to clean up the process, after the
Great Salt Lake Yacht Club, of which then I was commodore, launched a
lawsuit with the support of the Environmental Defense Fund.

I have to admit that the Kennecott process (going from batch to continuous
smelting) is much cleaner now, but this photo may be good evidence of what
is probably happening at other smelters around the world.

I am using this photo as the background image on facebook for the Interfaith
Power & Light fb page.

Yours free to use, if you feel that it is appropriate.

Theodore Roosevelt was born in a modest gothic brownstone house here, at 28 East 20th Street, on October 27, 1858. He lived in the house until he was 14 years old. Much altered after the Roosevelt family moved uptown in 1872, it was demolished in 1916, three years prior to his death. The Woman's Roosevelt Memorial Association, founded with the intention of preserving Roosevelt's memory, purchased the birthplace site, along with the adjacent home (also significantly altered) of Theodore's uncle, Robert Roosevelt. The assocation proceeded to demolish the uncle's house and commissioned Thodate Pope Riddle, one of the first female architects in America, to <reconstruct the childhome home as it had existed in 1865, when a mansard roof had been added and the interiors redisnged. A modest museum wing was built on the adjoining site. It was rededicated in 1923 and furnished by the President's widow, Edith, and sisters. The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site was authorized on July 25, 1962.

Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., also known as T.R. and to the public as Teddy, was the 26th President of the United States, and a Nobel Peace laureate, New York governor, NYC Police Commissioner, historian, naturalist, Amazon explorer, and author. He became President in 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley. A Progressive reformer who sought to move the Republican Party into the Progressive camp, he distrusted wealthy businessmen and dissolved 40 monopolistic corporations as a "trust buster." His "Square Deal" promised a fair shake for the average citizen, including regulation of railroad rates and pure foods and drugs. As an outdoorsman, he promoted the conservation movement, emphasizing efficient use of natural resources. After 1906, he moved left, attacking big business and suggesting the courts were biased against labor unions. In 1910, he lost the GOP nomination to friend and anointed successor William Howard Taft, but ran in the 1912 election on his own one-time Bull Moose ticket. Roosevelt lost but pulled so many Progressives out of the GOP that Democrat Woodrow Wilson won in 1912, and the conservative faction took control of the GOP for the next two decades.

As Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy, he prepared for and advocated war with Spain in 1898. He organized and helped command the first U.S. volunteer cavalry regiment, the Rough Riders, during the Spanish-American War. Returning to New York as a war hero, he was elected Republican governor in 1898. He was a professional historian, naturalist and explorer of the Amazon Basin; his 35 books include works on outdoor life, natural history, the American frontier, political history, naval history, and his autobiography. Roosevelt understood the strategic significance of the Panama Canal, and negotiated for the U.S. to take control of its construction in 1904; he felt that the Canal's completion was his most important and historically significant international achievement. He was the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize, winning its Peace Prize in 1906, for negotiating the peace in the Russo-Japanese War.

Roosvelt's image stands alongside Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln on Mount Rushmore and surveys of scholars have consistently ranked him from #3 to #7 on the list of greatest American presidents.

The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966.

Just as the rabbit finished his snack, Frankencow noticed a strange animal lurking in the forest. At first, she thought it was a trick of the moonlight casting shadows in the trees, but she realized her mistake when a cat seemed to appear from nowhere just beyond the table.

"Um, we have company," Frankie said to the rabbit and Bingo. "Is this a good thing or a bad thing?"

The rabbit looked fearfully over his shoulder, but he relaxed at once when he saw the cat. "That's just the cheshire cat," he told Bingo and Frankie. "He's relatively harmless as long as you ignore him."

"I always thought the cat must have been a figment of Alice's imagination - you know, because she missed her cat Dinah," Bingo mused aloud.

"Oh, no," the White Rabbit protested, "I assure you he is quite real, as you can see for yourself." But the cat's image seemed to dissolve before their very eyes.

"Cat, you quit that," the rabbit scolded, "you're scaring our visitors."

"I'm just playing," the cheshire cat said. "I don't mean to frighten them. Well, only a little bit." With that, the cat reappeared with a big grin on its face.

"Have you warned them about the Queen's temper since her re-ascension?" the cat asked.

"We haven't quite gotten to the current situation yet," the rabbit said brusquely, "so I would appreciate it if you would stop butting in."

Frankie and Bingo shared a glance. They had expected Wonderland to be a little fantastical, but the current state of affairs seemed more off-kilter than what they'd bargained for.
