Captain Kimo is back in Bangkok from a week stay at Grandma's house out in the country. I'll be heading back to Thailand's country side later tonight. The first thing I did when I got to Bangkok was go straight to the local fried chicken vendor down the street. After eating Grandma's food, I was ready for some good old fashion fried chicken and this guy makes the best!

Good children’s books bring us into the world and life of children so that we can react to them with greater understanding and empathy.

There are so many pop psychology books dealing with introducing a new child into the family but, in my humble opinion, the best book on the topic is “A Baby Sister for Frances.”

It perfectly captures the ambivalence the older sister feels about her new sibling – the desire to simultaneously run away and stay close (Frances hides under the dining room table), the desire to be acknowledged for her uniqueness along with her fear of being forgotten (“You know” says the father within earshot of his runaway daughter, “it is not the same house without Frances.”) and the importance of encouraging Frances to be a role model to the baby (“Even Gloria” said Mother, “as small as she is, can feel the difference…a girl looks up to an older sister. You know that.” she tells her husband).

Well not everything…but children’s books can be instructive, whether they mean to be or not.

I’ve lost count of the number of children’s books we’ve read over the years (and the number of times we’ve read them!) but suffice it to say it’s enough that my husband and I could (and sometimes do) have whole conversations composed solely of lines from children’s books (much to the chagrin of our actual children!). It’s not just that some of those books are so familiar (I’ve sworn off Caps for Sale for a lifetime – or at least until the next grandchild asks!), it’s that there is something about the cadence, the tone – and yes, the whimsy – that is just so compelling.

One thing I have learned from children’s books is to just enjoy the flights of fancy and the fantastic. I love the rhymes and imagination of Dr. Seuss. The words he invented actually deepen our appreciation of the beauty of language. And the creatures certainly expand our imaginations. I think that children – and adults – can share the marvel of where imagination and skill with words can take you. “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!”

Another favorite and real reading pleasure are the Frances books by Russell Hoban. If you haven’t read them, go immediately to amazon, do not pass go, and use your one-click button. Start with “Bread and Jam for Frances” or “A Baby Sister for Frances”. Frances’ parents (it’s a family of badgers) deal with all of her struggles with cleverness and humor. They never lose their patience. They never yell or scream. They are fun and wise. They are my role models! For example (spoiler alert), when Frances refuses to eat what her mother cooks and only wants bread and jam, that’s what she gets – for every meal, for every snack until…well I don’t want to give away the ending but let’s just say it’s a technique I wish I could use – and possibly apply to messy bedrooms as well.

Good children’s books bring us into the world and life of children so that we can react to them with greater understanding and empathy. There are so many pop psychology books dealing with introducing a new child into the family but, in my humble opinion, the best book on the topic is “A Baby Sister for Frances.” It perfectly captures the ambivalence the older sister feels about her new sibling – the desire to simultaneously run away and stay close (Frances hides under the dining room table), the desire to be acknowledged for her uniqueness along with her fear of being forgotten (“You know” says the father within earshot of his runaway daughter, “it is not the same house without Frances.”) and the importance of encouraging Frances to be a role model to the baby (“Even Gloria” said Mother, “as small as she is, can feel the difference…a girl looks up to an older sister. You know that.” she tells her husband).

I also enjoy the Arthur books by Marc Brown. He seems to explore some real issues without ever becoming preachy. Children are particularly drawn to “Arthur’s Underwear” (as they are to anything with underwear in the title) which deals with Arthur’s recurring dream about leaving his home without getting dressed. This is actually a common and classic scenario reflecting our insecurities and fear of exposure that is handled simply and with humor.

And who doesn’t love Curious George? Although we may object to the message that you can be mischievous and disobey the rules but as long as you “made our sad little Betsy happy again” it is all right, I think the free rein of his curiosity is healthy for young children. And mostly they just think it’s funny!

Although my husband dislikes the “Berenstain Bears” on the grounds that the books are sexist (the father is always wrong and on the one occasion where he is in the right, it says “It didn’t take a deep thinker…”) there certainly are good lessons to be learned. And the kids seem to enjoy them…something about bears…

I think in the end the power of children’s books, however, may not be so much in the moral lessons they are imparting as they are in the time and space they create for families – to sit together, to laugh at the antics of the creatures, to expand their use of understanding of language, to get perspective on the human condition – and to share the pleasure of good storytelling

There are, of course, other insights to glean from children’s books. I haven’t even begun to delve into Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are.” But for me, the ultimate teaching is the sense of awe that the Almighty as endowed His creation with the skill and imagination to create and illustrate stories that will delight millions for years to come.

What a place this is. When I first entered, I thought it was endless. The rows of pillars just repeat into the distance. It's just stunning. And as I was there quite late (around 7 o'clock) it was completely empty. Just me and my camera. It was also a great place for HDR. If you look at the before/after comparison, you will see that the bottom part was quite dark, with the ceiling brightly lit. A perfect example to when to use HDR.

A photo, taken by the Apollo 11 crew on their way home from the moon, showed both the first and last lunar landing sites. The first manned lunar landing, Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969, occurred at the southwestern part of the Sea of Tranquility. Apollo 17, the final Apollo mission, touched down in the Taurus-Littrow area, a combination mountainous highland and lowlands valley region. The Apollo 17 astronauts took advantage of the lunar roving vehicle developed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. to explore the rough terrain at Taurus-Littrow.

Photos from a stretch of road between Huntsville and Athens. There were lots of places like this, but we only stopped here to take photos. (Athens has electricity, so we went there to charge our cellphones at a relative's house.) The constant texts from the news stations on Twitter and the Red Cross, etc. totally drained my phone dry... Thanks to a neighbor of said relative, I now (temporarily, at least) have WIFI to upload these...

Some of the scenes we passed by are just crazy- trees twisted in half midway, or others plucked up from the roots- scores of both types, and some buildings totally leveled. We went to Tenessee for gas yesterday, and saw a tree that had crushed down into the middle of a house- it felt awful to look at- I just hope that no one was inside, or if they were, that it didn't hit them. :( I hope they're okay...

We aren't having much in the way of typical post-disaster riots and looting, but the counties still enacted a dusk-to-dawn curfew. For the most part, though, everyone is getting along and helping each other. A Publix on the way back from Tenessee still have some power yesterday, and they had opened some surge protectors (which multiply outlets) and placed them in the "lobby"(?) area in the front entrance of the store near to some seats- people were clustered there, charging their cellphones and laptops and things.

By the time we got out on the road, most of the trees- in fact, all that I saw- which had been across the road were removed and/or sliced: Mom said that someone mentioned to her that once the storm ended, all the country dudes grabbed their chainsaws and started hacking the roads clean.

The tornadoes were either small (in size!) or had "fingers", since some buildings/trees are totally leveled, but similar structures only 10-20 feet away are more or less intact. It's just surreal... I'm still having trouble registering this... Please keep Alabama in your thoughts and prayers.

Cool Photo Albums images

A few nice photo albums images I found:

Blues Project/Projections

Al Kooper looks so young on this cover! But, weren't we all so much younger back then?
One of two albums I bought last week while wandering through an antique store with a friend. I didn't go in there looking for albums, in fact, I haven't bought an album for at least 20 years, but when I saw the table filled with all these record albums, many of which I remembered owning, I couldn't resist buying at least two.
The cover shows some wear, but it still has the original inside cover, and the record itself is in excellent condition.
I'm really showing my age, but I actually owned this record when it was new. The album was released in the Fall of 1966.
Album Tracks:
1. "I Can't Keep From Crying" (Arranged by Al Kooper)
2. "Steve's Song" (Steve Katz)
3. "You Can't Catch Me" (Chuck Berry)
4. "Two Trains Running" (McKinley Morganfield)
5. "Wake Me, Shake Me" (Arranged by Al Kooper)
6. "Cheryl's Going Home" (Bob Lind)
7. "Flute Thing" (Al Kooper)
8. "Caress Me Baby" (Jimmy Reed)
9. "Fly Away" (Al Kooper)

Band Personnel:
Danny Kalb - guitar, vocals
Al Kooper - keyboards, vocals
Steve Katz - guitar, harmonica, vocals
Andy Kulberg - bass, flute
with Roy Blumenfeld - drums

An interesting photographic side note - the cover photo is credited to Jim Marshall. James Joseph Marshall (February 3, 1936 – March 24, 2010 was a photographer, often of rock stars. He had extended access to numerous musicians through the 1960s and 1970s, including being the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles last concert, and chief photographer at Woodstock.

There's an ancient printer in particular up on the 5th floor, which is rather temperamental. Every so often it will pump out a sheet of this code. I presume its the HEX or ASCII of the image it was supposed to print, but it produces some really nice looking graphics.

As interesting as it is, its not ideal the day before a hand-in...

Formed in 2001, given U.S. charitable status in 2004, and Canadian charitable status in 2007, the Steve Nash Foundation is a private foundation dedicated to assisting underserved children in their health, personal development, education and enjoyment of life. Like its NBA MVP founder, the Foundation is fast becoming a leader in assists . . . to a slightly shorter population.

Through our own initiatives, and through grants to public service and nonprofit entities in British Columbia, the Foundation aims to grow health in kids by funding projects that provide direct services to children affected by poverty, illness, abuse, or neglect, and create opportunity for education, health, and empowerment. We love the opportunity to get involved in the good work being done by child-focused ngo’s in our home province.

The Foundation also seeks to afford thoughtful solutions to community needs through our own projects to address critical health and education needs. The Foundation focuses its resources on underserved populations of children in British Columbia, Arizona, and the country of Paraguay. Equipping a neonatal intensive care ward in Asuncion to provide basic necessities for infants and their families, developing an early childhood education center of excellence to bring best practices to young kids that don’t always enjoy that access in Arizona, and uniting civic outreach, corporate and social service organizations to show kids how to get involved in their communities are examples of the daily work of the Foundation’s small but dedicated staff. Stemming from our first ever Steve Nash Foundation Charity Classic, held in Toronto, Ontario, in 2005, the Foundation is also working closely with the City to establish an all-access, all-kids after-school center there to build hope through hoops for kids.

While our work focuses exclusively on child welfare, we believe that corporations must share responsibility for the well-being of our communities. The Foundation employs and encourages environmentally-friendly office practices, and offers grantees assistance in developing their own recycling and energy conservation programs (check out our Green Leaf here). We also like to highlight the important work of other individuals and organizations, using our website links to increase their exposure, and contribute to their efforts. Further, we are proud to be working with young people that excel in their chosen fields, from whom we welcome energetic leadership and fresh voices.
