Afghan National Army Soldiers Search Roadway for IEDs
search image
A soldier of the Afghan National Army (ANA) investigates a possible improvised explosive device (IED) during a road search.

A significant offensive operation, which takes the independence and self-sufficiency of British-trained Afghan forces to a new level, has begun in central Helmand.

As the new year was seen in around the world, Afghan troops were opening a new chapter which sets the scene for their future autonomy and long-term role in the defence of their nation against extremism and terror.

Operation OMID PANJ ('Hope Five' in English) follows on from the successful Operation OMID CHAR which, at the time, was the largest operation in size, number of soldiers and duration to have been planned, led and conducted by the Afghan National Army.

But OMID PANJ takes things a step further, with the Afghans relying on even less support from British troops, who are present only in a supporting role. One of the key areas where significant development of Afghan capability is being demonstrated is their growing ability to find and render safe improvised explosive devices, the indiscriminate weapon of choice for the insurgency.

Being conducted in the Green Zone, north of the Helmand River, the operation is pushing the Afghan governmentÕs influence and security bubble further out. By the time of its conclusion, it will see a new patrol base established east of Gereshk between the River Helmand and the Bandi Barq Road. This rural area, filled with irrigation ditches, canals and small farm plots, interspersed with residential compounds, has suffered from significant insurgent intimidation due to its proximity to smuggling routes into Gereshk city.

The gaps are better, and it's painted! total cost: .65 for the trim. I had everything else, so that was nice. I do have some left-over trim if I decide to rebuild the frame.

The pictures are on a 15 second loop. I think my next part of this never-ending project is getting a way to display my friends photos on flickr. There is a screensaver called Slickr, but it is Windows only. This thing runs linux. :( There are a few solutions I have found online, but I want to try it myself.

Showdown in Downtown is a collaboration of sponsors, local non-profits, sports superstars who educate and empower new energy for community action, the Street Festival brings together private and public resources to show off all we can do together.

About the Steve Nash Foundation

About the Foundation
Formed in 2001, given U.S. charitable status in 2004, and Canadian charitable status in 2007, the Steve Nash Foundation is a private foundation dedicated to assisting underserved children in their health, personal development, education and enjoyment of life. Like its NBA MVP founder, the Foundation is fast becoming a leader in assists . . . to a slightly shorter population.

Through our own initiatives, and through grants to public service and nonprofit entities in British Columbia, the Foundation aims to grow health in kids by funding projects that provide direct services to children affected by poverty, illness, abuse, or neglect, and create opportunity for education, health, and empowerment. We love the opportunity to get involved in the good work being done by child-focused ngo’s in our home province.

The Foundation also seeks to afford thoughtful solutions to community needs through our own projects to address critical health and education needs. The Foundation focuses its resources on underserved populations of children in British Columbia, Arizona, and the country of Paraguay. Equipping a neonatal intensive care ward in Asuncion to provide basic necessities for infants and their families, developing an early childhood education center of excellence to bring best practices to young kids that don’t always enjoy that access in Arizona, and uniting civic outreach, corporate and social service organizations to show kids how to get involved in their communities are examples of the daily work of the Foundation’s small but dedicated staff. Stemming from our first ever Steve Nash Foundation Charity Classic, held in Toronto, Ontario, in 2005, the Foundation is also working closely with the City to establish an all-access, all-kids after-school center there to build hope through hoops for kids.

While our work focuses exclusively on child welfare, we believe that corporations must share responsibility for the well-being of our communities. The Foundation employs and encourages environmentally-friendly office practices, and offers grantees assistance in developing their own recycling and energy conservation programs (check out our Green Leaf here). We also like to highlight the important work of other individuals and organizations, using our website links to increase their exposure, and contribute to their efforts. Further, we are proud to be working with young people that excel in their chosen fields, from whom we welcome energetic leadership and fresh voices.

Refilling water bucket from a well in Mauritania

A few nice photo bucket images I found:

Refilling water bucket from a well in Mauritania
photo bucket
A woman refills her bucket from a well which Oxfam has repaired in Natriguel, Mauritania. Drought this year is making it difficult to have clean water as wells are drying up. Children are at risk of diarrhea which increases malnutrition.

Senegalese singer Baaba Maal has visited Mauritanian communities at the center of the current food crisis in the Sahel. Low rainfall, poor harvests, a lack of pasture and rising food prices are among the key factors driving this crisis, which now affects one in four people across the country. Today 700,000 people are food insecure in Mauritania.

Across the Sahel, 12 million people risk being victims of a serious food crisis if rapid action is not taken.

Helping millions avoid hunger
photo development
Female farmer members of a local agriculture development group return from a day of working in their fields near the Ugandan village of Kikoko. Helping small farmers be more productive and profitable can have a massive impact on hunger, nutrition, and poverty. 256 million people living in sub-Saharan Africa rely on agriculture as their source of work and income. Thanks to smart investment in agriculture, 98 million fewer people went hungry in 2010 than in the previous year. (Uganda, 2007)

(Ouganda, 2007)

Blue Tang Aquatics site powered by Joomla and my customised template based on design mockup by Adflare Group
photo editing websites
A website created based on three mock-up images provided by Adflare's senior designer and converted to a Joomla template.

For this Joomla template I used a modified version of the mockup image as the background image, hiding left and right columns to create a 1 column template format. This allowed the template width to meet the requirements in the mockup design.

The top menu was based on ja_purity's suckerfish menu navigation but customised extensively to fit the template. The menu was generated to mimic the website's site map as provided by the client.

The gallery was created by using an iframe displaying a slideshow of images hosted on flickr which can be updated by the client by logging into flickr, uploading photos and using the Organiser to order them.

Articles were categorised by topic so that Joomla automatically created Next and Previous buttons where required.

A teaser table was created to display two lines of content from five articles that the client wished to feature on the front page. I will be creating a user friendly template ja_vars.php file so that the text and teaser images can be edited in template admin.

Content module was modified to display contact information within one table cell so that the contact form could be displayed with it, all on the one page without scrolling.

:: Fallen from Grace - iPhoneography

by American Photographer Evan Santé: New York, London, San Francisco

Like the rest of the world; I have fallen in love with my iPhone and the creative freedom the various camera / editing applications provide… Unthinkable only a few years ago, I often find myself choosing to leave home without my DSLR. To be sure, there are tradeoffs but Camera Phone Photography offers a flexibility and style that is unique within the digital art world.

Much like Googled; iPhoneography has become a generic term representing any type of image taken with a mobile device.

All of the images contained within this photoset were created using one of my iOS Devices. You can find the specific information on Device, Camera & Processing Application’s used in the Tags section.

My Photo was used by Popular Photography" magazine in their Feb. 2007 issue in the article "The Right Lens for the Job". The article appears on page 72 and in the table of contents.

This is my first time really being published, so I'm kinda happy about it. Popular Photography is the biggest photography magazine in the world.

NOTE: From this photo it could appear that this photo was taken with a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 lens (which is a fine lens), but it in fact was taken with my Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 EF-S lens, which is noted next to the photo of the Tokina.

Mother's Wartime Passport - 1941

A few nice passport photo images I found:

Mother's Wartime Passport - 1941

INTRODUCTION

My mother is 29 in this photo. She's holding my late brother, James, who is almost a year old.

I came across several of my late mother's canceled passports recently. This is the most interesting one because of when and where it was issued: Rio de Janeiro, December 15, 1941.

My parents were living in Rio when Pearl Harbor was attacked. My father was a reporter for United Press, stationed in Rio.

I am guessing the declarations of war following Pearl Harbor promoted Mother to travel to the States with my brother ASAP in case subsequent wartime developments made travel to and from South America more difficult.

WARTIME TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

The passport has several interesting restrictions that reflect the unstable diplomatic and military situation in the late 30s and early 40s.

The first restriction, on Page 6, says:

"This passport is not valid for travel to or in any foreign state for the purpose of entering or serving in the armed forces of such a state."

The text is in red ink. It looks like it was part of the original passport rather than a stamp added after the passport was printed.

Until Pearl Harbor, the U.S. was officially neutral as to the conflicts in Europe and elsewhere in the world. Despite America's neutrality, some U.S. citizens were volunteering to fight in other countries, Spain and Great Britain being two examples. The restriction quoted above was meant to deter volunteer soldiers and airmen.

(I understand Americans who wanted to fly against the Germans in the Battle of Britain in 1940 went to Canada first, and then to Great Britain. U.S. authorities at the Canadian border practically gave Americans wishing to enter into Canada the third degree in an attempt to stop would-be military volunteers, though I suspect single young men in their late teens and early twenties were probably singled out for scrutiny.)

The next restriction, which is stamped into the passport on Page 7 and takes up half a page, says the following in red capital letters:

"This passport is not valid for travel in any country outside the Western Hemisphere."

The Western Hemisphere includes all the territory from 0 degrees latitude, which runs through Greenwich (London) in the UK, westward to 180 degrees latitude, which is the international dateline somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

Basically, the Western Hemisphere is the Americas, small bits of Western Europe, bits of Russia, and various islands in the Pacific.

As a practical matter, this restriction prevented travel to the Axis countries - Germany, Italy and Japan - and occupied countries in Europe and Asia.

This restriction was stamped into the passport before the passport was issued in December, 1941. I am assuming the restriction was put in place only after Pearl Harbor, though it's conceivable worsening diplomatic and military conditions in Europe and the Far East caused the State Department to prohibit travel to the Axis countries before the actual outbreak of war. I'm sure someone somewhere would know.

The final restriction appears in Page 11 of the passport. It was stamped into the passport when Mother renewed it in the U.S. in May, 1942, before returning to Brazil.

The renewal stamp says the passport "is not valid for travel in any country except:"

Below that, the clerk who issued the passport typed: "Brazil - Residence. Necessary countries en route."

What can we learn from all this? During a world war, the American government will severely limit civilian travel to foreign countries. That's understandable.

THE JOURNEY HOME AND BACK

The passport also has interesting visas and other stamps that mark the waypoints on Mother's journey to the US and back.

The dates of Mother's various departures and arrivals along her route are so close together they indicate she traveled by air, probably via Pan American Airways. I'd be interested whether Pan Am used a flying boat or a DC-3 on the Rio - Miami route. Pan Am had both types of aircraft in service on that route in 1941.

December 18, 1941: Permit to Exit Brazil, issued by the Brazilian Immigration Service in Rio, good for three months.

December 19, 1941: Visa for Trinidad in transit to the United States of America, issued by British Passport Control, Rio, good for single journey only."

December 27, 1941: Exit stamp, Marine and Air Police, Rio de Janeiro.

December 28, 1941: Entry permit, Trinidad "Permitted to land in TRINIDAD during Plane's stay in Port and to proceed to from said Plane.

December 29, 1941: U.S. Immigration Service, Miami, Florida.

Finally, there are a series of stamps marking the steps on Mother's return to Brazil in 1942.

May 29, 1942: Visa valid for single journey to Trinidad in transit, good for one month, issued by the British Vice Consulate in Miami, Florida.

May 30, 1942: Entry permit for Brazil as a permanent resident, Brazilian Consulate in Miami.

June 2, 1942: Inspection stamp, Marine and Air Police, Belem, Brazil; Federal Immigration Service, Belem, Brazil.

June 3, 1942: Inspection stamp, Marine and Air Police, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Immigration stamp, Rio de Janeiro.

ps: My mother's first name, as you can see on the photo, was Helen. I have photoshopped her middle and last names out of the image.
