A giant poinsettia tree in San Diego, California. This tree near a home in the Pacific Beach area is about 14' tall! I could not believe it when I saw the spindly tree with the bright red flowers and struggled to identify it. Then when I figured out it was a poinsettia I was totally amazed. What a surprise to see this plant grow to such a size! I am used to seeing folks grow a large plant once they've kept a plant from Christmas decor, but never more than 4 or 5' tall. Twas quite a beauty next to the pale adobe wall. Best to see in the largest size.

This is a cobalt blue star wall lamp that is at my local IKEA store. I used images from several folders of "My Pictures" and also some images from the image library of the program. Took an hour to create, and almost blew out my system. Word to the wise, when you upload the image to use, think twice about the file size of the original image! Ha ha, I forgot that this one was created with the UNEDITED photo I took several weeks ago. Oy!

The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

Images uploaded from the Belgian site of Gaïa, www.gaia.be/

I'm really sorry not to be present these days - other urgent things to do - anyway, it seemed important to me to show you this stuff :

In our 'cosy' litte country, each year up to 5 million little pigs are castrated - without any anaesthesia! - in order to make their meat smell better!!

A Wikipedia definition : "Barbarian" is a pejorative term for an uncivilized, uncultured person, either in a general reference to a member of a nation or ethnos perceived as having an inferior level of civilization, or in an individual reference to a brutal, cruel, insensitive person whose behaviour is unacceptable in the purportedly civilized society of the speaker.

Chris arrived right as Clint was in the middle of determining the kHz sample rate of various AVI files of X-Men:TAS (1990s) commercials. I'm using my "allfiles mv" script, which creates a text file that is the names of all files in a folder. It also runs them through a 1600-line perl script that executes hundreds of regular expression-driven (and file inspection-driven) rename rules, and then has the user edit the text file. Often with many files in the same set, you can use the macro function of your text file to do a complex renaming with one keypress (or less, if you hold it down for multiple files) per file. You just can't beat that efficiency when it's happening. But I never figured out how to get the kHz audio sample rate myself. And WinXP can't figure it out either -- only Win2K. So I get to either violate my naming conventions forAVI files (I don't do this for MKV files nowadays), or open every file up and look and see. Fun. Anyway, after editing the filenames, the allfiles mv script compares the 2 text files, and automatically renames them. It gets a little hairy if you accidentally use the same filename twice, but you can fix it in another window. This script has saved me 100s of hours. Or, to look at it another way: In equal time, my files are superiorly named. Of course a lot of this gets ruined when you deal with the filename limit on burned DVDs...

BACKSTORY: Chris H came to visit. We had made tentative plans to hang out on Thursday. Chris ended up drinking all day and had to take a cab to our house because he was so drunk. He had just bought a camera that day, so he was taking a lot of pictures. It was a good thing, because he didn't remember most of the evening, and the pictures helped fill in the blanks.

Chris is a good sport. He often finds himself on the receiving end of some photo editing, usually at his expense, but he doesn't mind... at least not too much!

When I showed him the Manbabies website, and asked him to pose with William for a head switch, he was happy to do so.

Chris' hair has also been changed in colour to match William's. The end result looks strange, but I'm sure he'll see the funny side, as will William when he grows up!

This beautiful Italianate Mansion sits off Illinois Route 4 south of Springfield and north of the Village of Chatham. Built in 1876 at a cost of ,000, this mansion was the home of Benjamin F. Caldwell (1848-1924), who had careers as the president of the Farmer's State Bank in Springfield, and the Caldwell State Bank of Chatham, as well as having served in the Illinois House and Senate. Mr. Caldwell also represented Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1899 to 1905.

The mansion and barn are on the National Register of Historic Places, and the property is privately owned. The Photoshop poster edges effect has been lightly applied in the processing of this image.

Chatham is a village in Sangamon County. It is located about 9 miles SSW of Springfield on Illinois Route 4. A special census conducted in 2005 put the population at 10,260. For more images of Chatham, visit my "Chatham IL" (Set).

028/365 | Springfield IL - Enos Flats or Row Houses (circa early 1890s), Enos Park | Project 365/2010
photo effects
The Enos Flats or the "Row Houses" were the latest in up-to-date apartments -- or flats as they were then known -- when they were built in the early 1890's. They were constructed for Zimri Enos, son of one of Springfield's most prominent pioneer families. The Enos family once owned huge tracts of land in the area bounded by Fifth, Carpenter, Fifteenth and North Grand. Zimri was a well-known Sangamon County surveyor and amateur historian.

Zimri's flat building consisted of five units -- each one like a private home with entryway, stained glass window, large rooms, finely finished interior trim, basements and rear yards. They were built as an investment and appealed to many middle-and-upper-middle class Springfield citizens who wanted the benefits of a house with the convenience of apartment living and a close-in location.

Upon his death in 1907, Zimri left one unit each to his five children, Louisa, George, Zimri, William and Catherine. During the intervening years the apartments were further subdivided into three apartments each by subsequent owners. Today these units have been restored by the present owners, Owen and Karen Anderson. They have a definite mystique and are reminiscent of "old town" sections of other cities.
