Magellans Cross Cebu City Philippines
photo for sale
Image by Striking Photography by Bo Insogna
Magellan's Cross is a Christian cross planted by Portuguese, and Spanish explorers as ordered by Ferdinand Magellan upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippines on April 8, 1521.

This cross is housed in a chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño on Magallanes Street (Magallanes being the Spanish name of Magellan), just in front of the city hall of Cebu City. A sign below the cross describes the original cross is encased inside the wooden cross that is found in the center of the chapel. This is to protect the original cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross for souvenir purposes or in the belief that the cross possesses miraculous powers. Magellan's Cross is a symbol of Cebu, and the chapel's image can be found in its city seal. It is also seen as the symbol of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines. www.jamesinsogna.com/Photography/Cebu-Philippines-Fine-Ar...

Nice Photo Printing photos

Builder's Photo of 2-8-0 Locomotive No 1402 "James Archbald," built in 1930 by the Delaware & Hudson Railroad.
photo printing
At least, I think that's what it is.

A few weeks ago I spotted an 8X10 black and white framed print in an antique mall in Allen, Michigan. The unusual subject and the extraordinary quality of the image caught my eye. The print was badly wrinkled but otherwise in good condition. I suspected that the wrinkles were the result of a botched mount job, in which case any effort at salvaging the print would have been impossible, but I couldn't tell for sure while it was behind glass in the frame. Since the price was only I decided to take a chance.

Upon removing the print from the frame I was happy to find that it was not stuck to either the glass or the backing board., and that it was an actual silver-halide photo print and not a halftone reproduction.

I wanted to remove the wrinkles if possible, both because they detracted greatly from the appearance of the print and also to make it possible to get a good scan. I thought that the print would soften and become limp if it were soaked in water, but I know from personal experience that photo paper made before the advent of resin coating will curl badly if simply air-dried. A "blotter roll" would be ideal for the job, but the chance of finding such a thing these days is nil. Eventually I decided to use pant hangers at the top and bottom to keep the print stretched as it dried, and this proved to be very satisfactory, The wrinkles are gone, I got the scan which you see here, and the original is back in the frame and looking very fine indeed.

The characteristic shape of the unexposed areas on the long sides caused by the sheet-film holder and the film manufacturer's edge markings told me that this is a contact print of an 8X10 negative, which accounts for the remarkable sharpness and tonal qualtiy. The edge marking reads "EASTMAN-NITRATE-KODAK." The nitrate base which supported the emulsion on film made many decades ago was highly flammable, so it was eventually replace by cellulose acetate, which removed the fire hazard. If you've seen the phrase "Kodak Safety Film," that's what it refers to.

The number 12016 and the date 8-22-30 were written on the negative by hand.

My next step, of course, was to Google "locomotive 1402." I wouldn't have been surprised if this photo had been mass produced for sale at train shows, and I expected to find it showing up on lots of web pages. Instead I found only a few references to locomotives bearing the number 1402, and no reproductions of "my" photograph.

I believe this is a photo of the engine shown here. The same locomotive is mentioned here, where it is said to have been built at the Alco-Schenectady Works.

The D&H 1402 was built in 1930, which corresponds to the date on the photo, so my guess is that I have an original builder's photo, made at the works before the locomotive was put into service. Certainly the fact that it was shot with an 8X10 camera and the superb craft evident in every step from exposing the film to making the final print suggest a professional job.

One thing this photo lacks is a sense of scale, but according to one of the web pages cited above those drivers are a little over 63 inches in diameter. This was a huge machine!

I hope that all who chance to view this image will share my pleasure in this lovely artifact of railroading and photography as practiced nearly eighty years ago. If anyone can correct or confirm my identification, or has any other information to share about either the locomotive or the photograph, I'd be very grateful if you'd leave a comment.

HDR post processing
image post
PLEASE NOTE: This is not my image and is simply an offer of help with post-processing HDR work. Full accreditation should be given to the photographer mentioned below.

I recently came across Hühnerauge's work after a comment on one of my images and seeing his excellent work on the qtpfsgui group.
His stream contained an image Aachner Dom. A wonderful image of the Aachen Cathedral Dome, which I felt could be improved slightly with a few post processing steps to give back some 'depth'. After a few flickr mails, (his English is far better than my German!), he graciously agreed to allow me to work on his image.

The original image top left is the HDR that was produced, (and I think was done very well considering this was a handheld shot!)
(Please note that the following steps can be adjusted to suit - A destructive method is used so ensure that you work on a copy of the image - Non destructive layer methods can be utilised as effectively.)

Firstly I increased the colour saturation:
Paintshop - Adjust -> Hue & Saturation -> Hue, Saturation, Lightness -> Increase saturation approximately 10%
Photoshop - Image -> Adjust -> Hue/Saturation -> Increase saturation approximately 30%, (photoshop is less aggresive)

Then I adjusted the Brightness/Contrast using the 'curves' method:
Paintshop - Adjust -> Curves -> use a flat 'S' shape
Photoshop - Image -> Adjust -> Curves -> (5,12) and (240,230) were the setpoints I used for a flat 'S' shape.

I then duplicated the layer and used a multiply to boost the colours and contrast more giving better seperation between light and dark:
Paintshop - Duplicate layer, set to Multiply, adjusted opacity of multiply layer to 50%
Photoshop - Duplicate layer, set to Multiply, adjusted opacity of multiply layer to 30%, (Photoshop being more aggresive.)

I then flattened the layers and used a non destructive dodging method to bring back out some detail lost in the shadows.
I also noticed a 'sensor dust spot'(?) that I removed using the clone tool.

Finally the image was flattened and I applied an 'Unsharp Mask' to the lightness channel, (far better way of increasing sharpness.)
Paintshop - Image -> split channels -> HSL, then select the Lightness layer to apply the unsharp mask, recombine the layers using Image -> combine channels -> HSL
Photoshop - Image -> Mode -> Lab Color, select the Lightness layer using the channels selector and apply the unsharp mask. Convert back to RGB using Image -> Mode -> RGB.

I feel that the image now has a better depth to it and although I know HDR is not to everyones personal taste, I find this a very 'pictoral' and pleasant image. I hope Hühnerauge is pleased with this rendition and that this may help him with further images he may produce.
(As mentioned my German is terrible, so if this doesn't translate well maybe someone would offer a German translation if this is required.)

Thankyou 'Hühnerauge' for this, I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Qtpfsgui may not be the most recognised HDR software out there, but for free it definately can produce excellent results when used wisely.

"Sustainable, equitable development is the great development challenge of the 21st century," said Stephen Tull, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP in Kazakhstan Resident Representative.

"The 2011 Human Development Report offers important new contributions to the global dialogue on this challenge. It is a comparative study showing how sustainability is inextricably linked to basic questions of equity— That is, of fairness and social justice and of greater access to a better quality of life."

We don't often deviate from our commitment to provide you all with free texture images, but when we do, it's only so we can bring you some free stock images! This week we've brought you some FREE high-resolution stock images of Sydney. However, instead of uploading a bunch of cliched shots of the harbour bridge, opera house or other tripe, we thought we'd look for some more uncommon elements of the city and this is what we've found.

You'll see some nice examples of the juxtaposition of old and new building design primarily, but also some other cool stuff we hope you can use either in design projects or perhaps simply as inspiration for a future design project of your own. Enjoy!

As always, Hosking Industries high-resolution texture images are FREE for personal and commercial use. However, you may not resell, repackage or redistribute these textures or generally pass them off as your own for monetary gain etc. Use them in your design projects, but don’t use them for commercial gain.
