PhotonQ-Published in SEED Magazine =)
photo magazine
A great suprise tonight. One of my PhotonQ was published on the first page of SEED the great scientific magazine. Thanks a lot for the opportunity Joe, and the great CC Creative Commons license !

SEED is a science magazine published bimonthly and distributed internationally. Each issue looks at big ideas in science, important issues at the intersection of science and society, and the people driving global science culture.

The second suprise came from the article itself =)

SEED - The Multiverse Problem
Is theoretical physics becoming the next battleground in the culture wars? Not according to some theologians and scientists, who see multiverse theory as evidence of god...

HAHA =) The connection surprised me but Loved it !!!

The magazine publishes original writing from scientists and science journalists. Scientists who have contributed recently to the magazine include: James D. Watson, Freeman Dyson, Lisa Randall, Martin Rees, Steven Pinker, E.O. Wilson, and Daniel Dennett, Craig Venter etc... wikipedia

"Spiders in Focus" Article in the December 2011 Issue of National Geographic Magazine!
photo magazine
Well - a year after first contact - I've been featured in National Geographic Magazine.

This month's issue (Dec. 2011) of National Geographic will include a 3 page spread about my work with Oklahoma's jumping spiders!

Be forewarned though - apparently there are varying editions of National Geographic for different regions - some run the Photo Journal section I'm published in and some don't. I have no way of knowing which areas receive what, but I have received emails from folks getting my issue from Brazil to England. So fingers crossed your area has it!

For those of you who would just like to read the article online:

ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/12/photo-journal/shahan-text

In other news - I'll be graduating from college here in a few days and it is painfully cold here in Oklahoma. Hopefully I can dig through my archives and pull out a couple unappreciated beauties for you guys during these winter months!

Copyright Infringement in Ideal Life Magazine نقض حقوق مولف در مجله زندگی ایده‌آل
photo magazine
Ideal Life magazine published a photo of my brother and me, taken by our mother, without our permission and against our will. The image was copyrighted under Creative Commons License (by-nc-nd) meaning that:

Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor.

Noncommercial. You may not use this work for commercial purposes.

No Derivative Works. You may not alter, transform, or build upon this work.

Unfortunately, Ideal Life magazine violated all of the above. There was no attribution, they used it in a highly commercial bimonthly magazine, and they somehow modified it. It seems that they do not like to pay for photos; they just hire someone to surf the Internet, and choose some free photos for them.

Thanks to Ms. Youssefi for letting me know about this act of copyright infringement.

After a few days, I found that the person in charge of this illegal act was Mr. Reza Saemi.

Two other cases of copyright infringement and using my photos illegally in Hamshahri Newspaper and Gardeshgar Monthly.

Photographs of prisoners by prisoners, for prisoners, featuring prisoner created painted photography backdrops. The largest unseen 'art system' subculture in the United States.

A Manhattan gallery exhibit highlights universally humanizing psychology: the trend in photos of inmates, taken by inmates, in front-wall murals of the outside world (painted by inmates).

Artist, critic, and documentary-maker David Adler had been teaching in prison when he discovered the "click click" phenomenon: photos of prisoners taken by prisoners in front-wall murals painted by prisoners, dreaming of life on the outside. It seems that this is a regular feature of prisons in the U.S., with murals varying regionally. The photographs, taken for family and pen pals, are particularly posed, soft, un-menacing, with the festive, contrived feel of a holiday photo booth at the mall, but also DIY and genuine in their meagerness.

Adler, who focuses on the intersection of art and economics, has been collecting these photographs for five years. He found that "at a time when people are questioning work coming out of the market-driven art world, particularly after the financial crisis, prison photographs are examples of art produced in a different institutional framework altogether. Within this art system, money plays almost no role. Yet the photographs are imbued with a value often lacking in expensive portraits from the free world." The Age of Innocence is on view now through August 31, 2012 at the Clocktower Gallery.

One of the fastest rangefinder M-mount lenses and one of the fastest that a person like me can actually afford without going into debts with some Yakuza boys. Sorry Leica, but instead of wasteing 600.000 yen for a Noktilux, I rather get a 35mm f1.2 for less than 1/6th of that ...

Series VI
photo equipment
Forgive the geeky intrusion... but a few times lately I've wanted to explain to people how cool the "Series" filter system was, and finally decided a visual aid would help.

Using filters with my Olympus SLR system was always really easy, since all my lenses used the same 49mm size. Things got more complicated as I started acquiring more and more weird old cameras & lenses, no two of which had the same diameter filter thread.

In the 1940s and 50s, there was a hugely popular system of modular lens accessories called Series V, VI, VII, and so on. They allowed you to use one set of filters (in whichever diameter was large enough), which drop into different adapters matching all your different lenses.

The Series adapters were made as threaded, push-on, or bayonet attachments. The filter itself was held inside the adapter with a standard threaded retaining ring--or, optionally, a lens shade with the same threading. A few lenses (e.g. Argus and Canon rangefinder) had standard Series threading as their native filter thread.

Recently my pal Mark ended up having his garage turn into the Aladdin's Cave of Series filters, after helping dispose of some photographic estates. Thanks to his generosity, I've now unearthed Series VI adapters matching virtually all my odd lenses (even a push-on one fitting the Diana!)--plus a nice assortment of filters, hoods, and close-up lenses....

This system isn't so practical for polarizers (because you can't grab the filter to rotate it); and it seems it fell out of favor in the era when SLRs rose to dominance. But if you ever have a chance to root around in the accessories bin at some swap meet or old-school camera store, the Series system is still pretty cool.

Fresa and Kasha are rather excited about the new features in picnik, the free online photo editor that lets you modify images from flickr, facebook, photobucket, your desktop, and then save back to these sites.

The new tools allow text and shape overlays, new color effects, and more. Some of these are tools that are going to be part of their premium package (US.95 per year), but this week, for the launch, they are all free.

So if it were me, I'd play a lot this week with picnik, more fun and creative than chasing cats,

January 15th: Santiago Stelley: The Wonderful Horrible Life of VICE
online photo editor
VICE's Santiago Stelley in attendance for discussion along with Thomas Morton and Hamilton Morris.

VICE Magazine, now headquartered nearby in Williamsburg, has grown from a fringe counter culture zine to a global youth brand. Their online television network is one of the most frequented destinations in online video. Focusing on short and medium form journalism, they report on popular and counter culture, often bringing to light fantastic and under told stories from around the world. They navigate terrain from traditional journalism, hosted serial programs, and branded content.
Much of the network’s success is a result of the provocative documentaries produced by Santiago Stelley. He has covered Somali refugees in Kenya, transvestite mosques in Thailand, bestiality in Colombia, and hallucinogenic frogs in the Amazon, to name a few.
Stelley will be presenting highlights of his work in company with collaborators for a discussion on chasing the white whale and the ever evolving world of Vice Media.
Curated with Matt Yoka.

Program runtime: 80 minutes
We will be screening the following videos:
Balls Deep – Sewers of Bogota
Hamilton’s Pharmacopeia – The Icelandic Skin-Disease Mushroom Fashion Fiasco
Vice Meets – Issei Sagawa
Santiago Stelley was born in Madrid and studied Latin American Studies and Comparative Literature at SUNY Buffalo and the University of Havana. After contributing for years as a correspondent for COLORS Magazine he moved to Venice where he spent 4 years as a full time Editor and Associate Creative Director. In 2004, Mr Stelley left COLORS to head up the Editorial Department of La Fabrica in Madrid and to curate exhibitions for PhotoEspana. During this time he also worked as a Creative Director for LVMH fashion campaigns and catalogues. In 2006 Santiago moved back to NY to work with the Vice Magazine team in developing it’s on-line television network. He is currently the Creative Director for VICE.com.

Thomas Morton is a scrawny nerdlinger from Atlanta who moved to New York to convince the fagbashers he grew up around that he’d “made it.” He’s worked for Vice Magazine since 2004, first as a gofer and drug-mule, then editorial assistant, then assistant editor, then back down to associate editor, then someone had the idea of making him host documentary videos and he’s been living out this cruel prank ever since. As an “on-air personality” he has helped make films in a number of countries around the world, about such subjects as Kyrgyz bride kidnapping, the depredation of the Amazon rainforest, the gay New York leather scene, pollution in the Pacific, witch doctors who give West African email scammers magic powers, and music. Thomas spent the first two years of high school as a goth and is getting a little fat in the stomach area.

Stopping for Lunch at the Emerald Lake in the Andes (and a new photo-sharing thing)

We started the hike before the sun came up. It was really cold, so I was dressed in layers. People always give you very silly advice. Actually, whenever anyone tells me to "dress in layers", I always find it very condescending! Why is that? I don't know why that bothers me. I mean, OF COURSE dress in layers. Oh, you mean, if I get too hot, I can just take off a layer? Oh, brilliant! Why didn't I think of that? Well... This is a concept everyone is already familiar with, so whenever anyone tells you to "dress in layers", try not to let it annoy you as much as it does me.

Anyway, after removing many layers, since I was burning hot after the first five minutes from carrying 50 lbs of camera equipment over the Andes, we stopped at this mountain lake to relax and have a quick lunch. It was a good chance to drop off the bag, put together my camera and tripod, then break it all down again, repack, and get back on the hike.

(The video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4H6pMKsoLM )

Also, we have a fun new features opening today on the site. It's a great and simple way for you to share photos on Facebook, Twitter, Email, or IM. You can probably see it when you mouseover a photo... I think it will be a good way for regular viewers to easily share the photos with their friends and family! Below is a short video showing how to use it (even though it's pretty dang simple!). Again, the more you share, the better it is for the site... so thanks again, very much!
