A FAVORITE AUNT IN 1963

A FAVORITE AUNT IN 1963

A Short Tribute To My Aunt, My Other Mother...

My aunt dorothy. 1905--1972. If one looks carefully, the framed picture holds a photo I sent her while I was overseas in USN. The coat belongs to my Uncle. My aunt was almost always cold and often wore one of my Uncle Jim's jackets or shirts as she went about her day.

Aunt Dort never learned to drive. Neither her mother or dad or sister ever drove a car. When she was growing up, she obviously walked everywhere until she began high school sometime around 1917. As a youth who spent much time with my aunt, I recall the long walks we took when she needed groceries that were not available from one of two neighborhood groceries only a few blocks from home. For whatever reasons, she would not purcase meat products from either of the small grocery stores, thus we walked about three miles to what was a community called Fairmount where there was a Supermarket.

We walked the railroad tracks to and from the small town of Fairmount. It was not until after I began high school that a television came to live with us. My uncle traded a beautiful green 1938 Pontiac two door for a black and white television. My aunt never lost her fascination for television and made it a special event to watch I Love Lucy and Lawrence Welk. Looking back on those years, I am glad we did not have television early on; they bought me a radio for my room and every evening I sat up on a high bar stool in front of my radio placed on top of an encyclopedia case filled with fairly recent encyclopedias published in 1939.

My entertainment was the Lone Ranger, Gangbusters, and a few other other classic programs that had not yet become classics. Sky King was another good one. The sound effects and the stories intrigued me and helped me to create illustrations within my mind as I listened.

My aunt was a very special lady, indeed. Throughout my elementary school days, she would fix me toast and hot chocolate with a bowl of Wheaties before sending me off to school. When I think about her, I always remember how sweet and gentle she was, never one to raise her voice though she must surely have had many reasons to discipline me for antics not consistent with her values. When she learned that I was drinking beer while in high school, she never understood how I could rationalize that it was okay. Of course, it wasn't okay.

Her wisdom and kindness, two of her many virtues as a little woman who was hardly five foot tall. If I had it to do over, I would wait until I was out of school and on my own before drinking beer. That would have pleased her.

My New Toy

I couldnt help it, I saw it on Saturday and fell in love. The saleman said "Would you want to hold it and see how it feels ?" I know I should have said no then but it looked so darn good. Once I had it in my hands I knew I had to have it " Ill go home and have a think about it" I said. Today I gave in and went back and bought it. I still plan on using my little Sony for macros (until I get a macro lens) but look forward to playing with my new toy.

Sunset light reflecting on the side of the still under construction Jerwood art gallery in Hastings. I have heard quite a few locals calling it the Jedward as it is something people seem to love or hate! Personally having a choice or an art gallery or a coach park I know what I would rather see there, can't wait for it to finally open.

conseqüentemente eles digo que muitos vendrán de orientar mais de Occidente, mais ele mesmo localize a ela mesa com Abraham, Isaac mais Jacob, em ele reino de os céu;

Obra Padre Cotallo
photo letters
Image by Jose Antonio Cotallo Lopez

Salmo 93(92),1ab.1c-2.5.

¡Reina el Señor, revestido de majestad!
El Señor se ha revestido,
se ha ceñido de poder.
El mundo está firmemente establecido:
¡no se moverá jamás!

Tu trono está firme desde siempre,
tú existes desde la eternidad.

Tus testimonios, Señor, son dignos de fe,
la santidad embellece tu Casa
a lo largo de los tiempos.

Solemnity of Saint Peter and Paul, Apostles.. Obra Padre Cotallo
photo letters
Image by Jose Antonio Cotallo Lopez
Friday 29 June 2012
solemnity of Saint Peter and Paul, Apostles

Book of the acts of the Apostles 12, 1-11.
At that time, King Herod had arrested some members of the Church to mistreat them.
He commanded run James, brother of John,
and seeing this pleased the Jews, he also arrest Pedro. These were the days of 'Acimos breads'.
After arrest, he did to imprison, putting him in the custody of four soldiers guard of four relays each. His intention was to bring it to the people after Easter.
While Peter was in custody in the prison, the Church did not cease to pray to God for him.
The night before the day that Herod intended to make it appear, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and the other sentinels guarding the prison gate.
Suddenly, the Angel of the Lord appeared and a light resplandeció in the Dungeon. The Angel struck Peter and did lift, telling him: ' get up fast!'. Then chains him fell from the hands.
The Angel said to him: 'You have to get the belt and sandals' and Peter did. Then he said: 'Cover you with the mantle and follow me'.
Pedro left and followed him; not realized that it was true what was happening by intervention of the Angel, but that he believed he had a vision.
They thus became the first and the second guard post, and arrived at the door of iron which gave to the city. The door opened single in front of them. Came and went until the end of a street, and immediately the Angel turned away from him.
Peter, becoming itself, said: 'Now I know that actually the Lord sent his Angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and everything expected the Jewish people'.

Psalm 34 (33), 2-3.4-5.6-7.8-9.
I will bless the Lord at all times
his praise is always on my lips.
My soul glory in the Lord;
the humble hear and will brighten.

Glorify the Lord with me
We praise your name all together.
I looked up to the Lord: he said
and he rescued me from all my fears.

Look to him and will be shining,
and their faces were not avergonzarán.
This poor man invoked the Lord:
he heard him, and saved him from their anxieties.

The Angel of the Lord camping
surrounding of his faithful, and the pound.
Like and see how good is the Lord!
Happy that it took refuge!

Second letter of St. Paul to Timothy 4, 6 – 8.17-18.
I'm already about to be poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure approaches:
I fought until the end the good fight, I concluded my career, I kept the faith.
And already ready for me the Crown of Justice, that the Lord, as a fair judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but to all those who have waited with love its manifestation.
But the Lord was beside me, giving me forces, so that the message be proclaimed my through and reached the ears of all the pagans. So I was spared from the mouth of the lion.
The Lord will deliver me from all evil and I will preserve until that enters into his Heavenly Kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever! Amen.

Manhattan is the oldest and the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City. Located primarily on the island of Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson River, the boundaries of the borough are identical to those of New York County, an original county of the state of New York. The borough and county consist of Manhattan Island and several small adjacent islands: Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island, Mill Rock, and U Thant Island; as well as Marble Hill, a very small area on the mainland bordering the Bronx. The original city of New York began at the southern end of Manhattan, expanded northwards, and then between 1874 and 1898, annexed land from surrounding counties. The County of New York is the most densely populated county in the United States, and one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a 2010 population of 1,585,873 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.5 km2), or 69,464 residents per square mile (26,924/km²). It is also one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, with a 2005 per capita income above 0,000. Manhattan is the third-largest of New York's five boroughs in population, and its smallest borough in land area.Manhattan is a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of both the United States and the world. Anchored by Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City vies with the City of London as the financial capital of the world and is home of both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many major radio, television, and telecommunications companies in the United States are based here, as well as many news, magazine, book, and other media publishers.Manhattan has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. It is also the location of the United Nations Headquarters. It is the center of New York City and the New York metropolitan region, hosting the seat of city government and a large portion of the area's employment, business, and entertainment activities. As a result, residents of New York City's other boroughs such as Brooklyn and Queens often refer to a trip to Manhattan as "going to the city", despite the comparable populations between those boroughs.

Corn in Residue with Healthy Soil (B/W)
photo services
Image by USDA NRCS South Dakota
Plant residue leftover from the previous year or from cover crops protects soil from erosion and increases organic matter. It also helps keep moisture in the soil profile. With summer heat, soil temperatures can rise fast stressing crops. In Bill Nelson’s fields, leftover plant matter on the soil surface has built organic matter and soil structure. “Those macro pores in the soil profile are essential–they are what helps water to infiltrate the soil profile,” says Eric Barsness, NRCS Agronomist, Brookings, SD. Photo Source: USDA NRCS South Dakota.

CAPTION: The soil structure in Bill Nelson’s fields in Lake County, S.D., has organic matter (dark, rich color) and live roots extending way down,” says NRCS Conservation Agronomist Eric Barsness, Brookings, SD. “Healthy soil should look like chocolate cake with air holes permeating throughout. Nelson says “The number of earthworms in my fields is huge. It is fun to look around to see what’s happening down there.”

HEALTH OF SOIL FACTOR FOR WEED/PEST ISSUES
Conservationists Encouraging “Soil Checkups”
NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE (NRCS), Huron, SD, July 17, 2013— This growing season, producers should take some time to assess the condition of their cropland soil resource say conservation professionals. Healthy soil is essential for plant growth and resilient to things that stress it, such as floods, drought, diseases and pests. Agronomic specialists with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) are urging producers to take a look at the health of the soil in their own fields and pastures and get help if their soil isn’t functioning as well as it should.
A top factor is organic matter because it holds nutrients and water for plant use and growth. NRCS Conservation Agronomist Jason Miller, Pierre, S.D. says “People can’t do much about the type of their soil, but we can adjust management to increase the amount of organic matter in our soil.” Increasing organic matter increases the soils’ capacity for regulating plant available water along with other benefits.
A “healthy thing” is use of cover crops. However, Miller comments that corn-soybean rotations in a large portion of South Dakota can have challenges for incorporating successful cover crops into rotations since moisture and timing are limiting factors.
Bill Nelson is using cover crops for his cropland in Lake County, SD. Because of the diversity in his cropping sequence, Nelson is seeing benefits of reduced soil compaction and improved nutrient uptake and management. “My fields are gentle, rolling hills typical of eastern South Dakota, but erosion is not happening here,” says Nelson, “The residue and organic matter has greatly improved infiltration and soil water holding capacity.”
Miller says other options for healthier soil are diversifying the plants covering the soil surface and keeping living roots in the soil as long as possible. “Producers, especially in eastern South Dakota, should be incorporating a small grain into the rotation that will then allow a successful cover crop to be incorporated behind the harvest,” he explains. So, for example in a five-year rotation, Miller explains, “Producers can have a portion of their corn acres going into small grains (that contain a cover crop the previous year) and another portion going into soybean stubble. That small grain stubble allows better opportunity for establishing and getting the most benefit out of cover crops–using nutrients from the previous crops and increasing organic matter.”
These practices build organic matter with positive effects on the biological life in the soil. “Active micro-organisms are what helps keep the health of the soil in balance,” explains Eric Barsness, NRCS Conservation Agronomist, Brookings. In mid-July, he used a soil probe in Nelson’s fields and found a rich, dark top soil about a foot deep that has resulted from the good cropping rotations based on soil condition, residue amounts, and use of cover crops. “The soil probe easily slid into Bill’s soil because of the organic matter, good structure and aggregate stability,” says Barsness.
Nelson’s crop rotation for this no-till field was oats (2011), cereal rye as a cover crop, soybeans (2012), and soybeans (2013). He put the cereal rye in with a fall seeding and when the snow came off, the rye was green. “That year (2012), we had a lot of spring rain and prevent plant acres around the county,” Nelson explains. “The root system from that rye cover crop in my rotation held up the machinery up so we could get the soybeans planted.”
The rye was terminated prior to it competing with the soybeans. This worked out well for Nelson, he says, “Then, that mat left from the rye root system and the above-ground residue was just what the fields needed.” Additional residue can reduce weed pressure and helps fields hold moisture if the weather turns hot and dry.
Nelson used the rye in his rotation to help get to his goal of maintaining or increasing organic matter (OM) on his land to mimic levels found in natural prairie soils. Soil tests average 5.0 to 6.3 percent OM in Nelson’s fields.
Another benefit he’s seeing, Nelson told Barsness, is the ‘break’ from weed and pest problems. “With my rotation, I just don’t have pest and weed issues such as corn root worm or Glyphosate-tolerant weeds,” says Nelson.
“When a system gets out of balance, problems can pop-up. If you’re seeing disease or pest issues with your crops,” Miller says, “Maybe it’s time to look past the symptoms and get to the source. Diversifying crop types and incorporating cover crops can help your soil to be more healthy.” Contact Natural Resources Conservation Service for free on-site farm or ranch resource consultations. On the web, links to technical publications and guides are available at www.sd.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/CoverCrops.html.
A healthier soil means better moisture infiltration, retention or movement through the soil profile. “This is a major benefit in the long-term,” says Miller. “By evaluating what their soil needs, producers can feel better about management decisions as they make adjustments to their operation.”

Replicas in silver of the Queen's Doll's House Table Service, being shown to the blind children at Sunderland Museum. 8th jan 1926

“To them, their fingers are eyes”

From 1913, John Alfred Charlton Deas, a former curator at Sunderland Museum, organised several handling sessions for the blind, first offering an invitation to the children from the Sunderland Council Blind School, to handle a few of the collections at Sunderland Museum, which was ‘eagerly accepted’.

Hiking in the Catalinas today, we found this hidden little stream, waterfalls, and a deep swimming hole too. No one around .. So nice. Thinking this is called a Riparian area. In a day or two the water will be all gone I am sure.

The Lost Abbey Angel's Share 2009
photo sharing
A bottle of Angel's Share 2009 from The Lost Abbey in San Marcos, California, at Olympen in Oslo.

The Angel's Share is the flagship beer from Lost Abbey, it's an 11.5% abv barley wine that has been aged for 9 months in brandy barrels. Compare this to the 2008 vintage that was aged for only 6 months in wine barrels but with a higher abv, of 12.5%.

The beer poured a dark brown color with minimal head. Rich aroma of vanilla, oak and sweet caramel. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavor starts out with a caramel sweetness, some oak and vanilla too. The alcohol provides a warm bite and some hop bitterness cleans up the palate in the finish. A fantastic version of Angel's Share and a lot richer and more aromatic than the 2008 vintage.

My winning rugby photo
my photos
Yesterday, on January 18th 2013, this rugby photo won an important local prize: it's the official Deventer 'Sportsphoto of 2012' (Deventer sportfoto van 2012). I received the prize in a crowded theatre Deventer Schouwburg. Four other photos were also nominated for the prize, but my photo had the most votes from the public, mostly rugby fans from all over the country.

Soon the photo will be printed on huge-sized outdoor canvas: 3 x 6 meters (118 x 236 inch) and hanged on the wall of the local sports-centre De Scheg.

I am very proud and happy with this prize and recognition as a local (sports) photographer. Thanks goes to photographer Rob Gommans for his help with this photo.

This intricate frame made of interlocking hundreds of slender pieces of wood using no glue or nails is an example folk art known as 'crown of thorns'. Sometimes known as tramp art (particularly in the US) because it was made and sold by wandering itinerants.
