New York is a great place for walkin-around photography. I always suggest using a wide-angle lens to shoot buildings and architecture. Now, many people complain that it can distort lines and change the angles. This does not really bother me so much, because I think many people can take this wide-angle view in their mind and then re-calibrate everything to make sense. For example, that black building is obviously a square building with right angles, even though the top of it seems to have a 110 degree corner. Honestly, I don't think 95% of viewers even think about it. They just see the photo and it "feels good" to them. I often have professional photographers come comment on my wide-angle architecture shots when the walls are not 90 degrees perpendicular to other objects. My response is, I'm sure to them, quite childish, since I usually say, "Who cares?"

Besides, using a wide-angle lens is usually the only way to get the whole scene inside of a rectangle, which, itself, is an arbitrary viewing shape.

Times Square during my 2008 visit to New York City.

From Wikipedia:

Times Square is a major intersection in Manhattan, a borough of New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The Times Square area consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.

Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed after the Times Building (now One Times Square) in April 1904. Times Square, sometimes known as the "Crossroads of the World," has achieved the status of an iconic world landmark and has become a symbol of New York City. Times Square is principally defined by its spectaculars, animated, digital advertisements.

The intersection of Broadway and 42nd Street, at the south-east corner of Times Square, is the Eastern Terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States of America.

Manhattan is the oldest and the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City. Located primarily on the island of Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson River, the boundaries of the borough are identical to those of New York County, an original county of the state of New York. The borough and county consist of Manhattan Island and several small adjacent islands: Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island, Mill Rock, and U Thant Island; as well as Marble Hill, a very small area on the mainland bordering the Bronx. The original city of New York began at the southern end of Manhattan, expanded northwards, and then between 1874 and 1898, annexed land from surrounding counties. The County of New York is the most densely populated county in the United States, and one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a 2010 population of 1,585,873 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.5 km2), or 69,464 residents per square mile (26,924/km²). It is also one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, with a 2005 per capita income above 0,000. Manhattan is the third-largest of New York's five boroughs in population, and its smallest borough in land area.Manhattan is a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of both the United States and the world. Anchored by Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City vies with the City of London as the financial capital of the world and is home of both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many major radio, television, and telecommunications companies in the United States are based here, as well as many news, magazine, book, and other media publishers.Manhattan has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. It is also the location of the United Nations Headquarters. It is the center of New York City and the New York metropolitan region, hosting the seat of city government and a large portion of the area's employment, business, and entertainment activities. As a result, residents of New York City's other boroughs such as Brooklyn and Queens often refer to a trip to Manhattan as "going to the city", despite the comparable populations between those boroughs.

Decorated Saab car as sculpture (back-er)

Fittingly, the license plate said "MEOW".

See this picture for a little more of the hood.

I'm not sure which Saab model it is: maybe a 90s vintage 900 or 9000, or maybe a 2000-ish 9-3 (first generation) or 9-5.

In any case, the real answer is that this car is truly one of a kind now.

UPDATE 12 Jan 2010: Spotted again! I saw the car while driving through Harvard Square this morning, and was able to stop & get a few more photos of this magnificent, magnificent beast of a car -- and with the better camera, too. Enjoy!

UPDATE 30 Mar 2010: The hunt is on! Teresa Hanafin at Boston.com's RAW Blog today ran Who drives this funny car?, in which a Globe reader from Andover is asking for info about the owner of the car, noting that it has been several times in Boston's northwest suburbs (Burlington, Arlington, Andover, Cambridge, etc). According to some commenters, the owner may live (or work?) in Belmont, as it seems like it's seen there pretty often.

I don't want to infringe on the driver's privacy too much, unless she wants to "out" herself as the owner of this fine machine, so I'll simply add the handful of clues that I have:

• Both times I've seen the car, a woman was driving it.
• When I saw it in Harvard Square in January, she was wearing a Dr Seuss hat.
• When I saw it near the Museum of Science in July 2008, there was a couple of kids in the back seat, one with curly (red?) hair.
• She's way ahead of you on the "EYESORE" jokes :-)

UPDATE 31 Mar 2010: The Boston.com blog post ferreted out the info within hours:

Jenny wrote to let us know that a correspondent for one of the Globe's regional editions wrote about the car, identifying the owner, about a year and a half ago.

View On Black Much better large on black!

Well we finally got the big dump of snow in Clinton Township with some areas getting as much as twelve inches! I was waiting for a day with some sun and it looked like Saturday might grant that wish and it did for a short time around 10am. I parked my car in the unplowed lot of Canal Park and ventured into the woods. As people drove by they were looking at me like I was nuts. The whole trail had about a foot of snow with some drifts getting higher and it was like being on a stairmaster as I trudged a half of mile through the backwoods trails. To my disappointment, a lot of things I thought were “blockbusters” were ruined with unforgiving branches and tree limbs ruining many opportunities. While I was getting frustrated, I looked behind myself and realized I was in the perfect place for my best chance at quality material. I cleared an area for me to set up shop and took this photo.
