Giveaway!
photo prints
I’m doing a print giveaway! It’s a new month, a new school year, and I just passed 13,000 profile views! Plus, I haven’t done anything yet to thank you guys for all your support and help over the past year. Everything from favorites to comments and views to tags, I appreciate everything.

So basically, the giveaway will be like any other. To enter, comment on this photo by September 11th with the links of photos I have uploaded on flickr or in comments (please state which one in comments). I’ll pick 3 people randomly (either by an online generator or the old fashion way), and I’ll contact you for your address and whatnot that week. I’ll try to get the photos sent out before the end of September.

Guidelines:
1. You must live in the United States
2. A limit of 4 photos per user
3. Please note that all of my film prints will not be available for the giveaway
4. You must enter before September 11th

I tagged a few people who I felt might be interested. I hope you don’t mind!
Thank you to whoever enters and all those who consider!

I got my SDR kit in the mail today from Tony Parks, KB9YIG. I will hopefully soon have a 40 meter receiver plugged into my computer from these tiny bags of parts.

I ordered it at the SDR website.

Here's a link to some photos of the Finished Product.

Once finished, you plug this into your computer via the sound card and you can tune the band with free software that you use on your computer.

William Alfred Cocks of Ryton [1892-1971]

Here are some boys taking part in physical exercises at the Boys Club, run from Cocks' own home. nd [1910]

William A Cocks of 18, St Mary's Terrace, Ryton, was a well known local watch and clock maker and a keen amateur archaeologist and photographer. His father, John Cocks was a Newcastle Bank official who wrote for the Hexham Courant as "Old Cross" for many years, and was closely involved with Ryton Congregational Church. William Cocks was also probably a member of the Church and recorded its activities.

The remains of a supernova first seen in 1604.
image url
Description: This composite Chandra X-ray (blue and green), Hubble Space Telescope optical (yellow), and Spitzer Space Telescope infrared (red) image shows a cloud of gas and dust that is 14 light years in diameter and expanding at 4 million miles per hour (2,000 kilometers per second). The optical image reveals 10,000 degrees Celsius gas where the supernova shock wave is slamming into the densest regions of surrounding gas. The infrared image highlights microscopic dust particles swept up and heated by the supernova shock wave. The X-ray data show regions with multimillion degree gas, or extremely high energy particles. The higher-energy X-rays (colored blue) come primarily from the regions directly behind the shock front. Lower-energy X-rays (colored green) mark the location of the hot remains of the exploded star.

Creator/Photographer: Chandra X-ray Observatory

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, which was launched and deployed by Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, is the most sophisticated X-ray observatory built to date. The mirrors on Chandra are the largest, most precisely shaped and aligned, and smoothest mirrors ever constructed. Chandra is helping scientists better understand the hot, turbulent regions of space and answer fundamental questions about origin, evolution, and destiny of the Universe. The images Chandra makes are twenty-five times sharper than the best previous X-ray telescope. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., manages the Chandra program for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory controls Chandra science and flight operations from the Chandra X-ray Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Darkness on The Ferry Building
image url
Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
The Ferry Building in San Francisco is a historic landmark that once served as a transportation hub but has now morphed into a marketplace full of cafes and restaurants. It sits along the Embarcadero at the foot of Market Street and you will find many of the historic trolley cars making stops in the front. One evening I took the short stroll from my hotel over to this place, in hopes of getting a shot or two. I was happy to find it deserted inside, so of course I got a few shots there, but I was more happy when I wandered outside and located an adjacent pier that offered this wonderful view of the structure. Once I saw those neon lights on top that spell out "Port of San Francisco" I knew I was in photography heaven. I rather like nighttime photography, though I don't often have time to pursue it, so I was pretty fired up to get some architecture, skyline, water, HDR, darkness and all those twinkly lights and reflections in one fell swoop.

This is a 5 exposure HDR shot at f/7.1, with exposures from -2 to +2. The longest exposure went 30 seconds, which feels like an eternity when you are excited about seeing what you came up with. I merged them in Photomatix, then made some adjustments in PSE and Aperture.

By the way, I registed this website with CoolPhotoBlogs, so if you like my work please take a moment and vote for this site at this URL: www.coolphotoblogs.com/profile15048

Coronet Cluster: A Neighbor of Star Formation (A region of star formation about 420 light years from Earth.)
image url
Description: The Corona Australis region is one of the nearest and most active regions of ongoing star formation in our Galaxy. At only 420 light years away, the Coronet is 3.5 times closer than the Orion Nebula Cluster. The Coronet contains a loose cluster of a few dozen known young stars with a wide range of masses at various stages of evolution. The central area of the star-forming region contains the densest clustering of very young stars, embedded in dust and gas. This composite image shows the Coronet in X-rays (Chandra, purple) and infrared emission (Spitzer, orange, green, and cyan). By studying the variability in different energies, scientists hope to better understand the evolution of very young stars.

Stars over the Bay Bridge

Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
I was happy to find my hotel in San Francisco was right in the Financial District, putting it a short walk to both The Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge. One evening while on a photo stroll (I did a lot of those that week!) I was over at The Ferry Building, taking lots of shots (from an adjacent pier) of that beautiful building all lit up at night. I happened to turn my attention just off to my left and I saw the lights just a sparklin' over at the Bay Bridge. I am a big fan of bridges and love taking pictures of them, plus I just like the idea of connecting different places. I find a bridge like this, all lit up, to be irresistible. The Golden Gate Bridge gets all the press and attention, and it is a real beauty, but I have to say that in my humble opinion the Bay Bridge can hold its own. This is a single 30 second exposure at f/5.6.

Nice Photo Lighting photos

A few nice photo lighting images I found:

Natural Bokeh in the Morning Light
photo lighting
A natural form of "bokeh" produced from the strong early morning light across my carport outside my front door. The folk art owl has been featured in many early photos on my stream, as has been the old, weathered chair. The light is so bright and comes in at a sharp angle towards the adobe wall. The many slender pomegranite trees on the other side of the wall produce these circles of bokeh shadows. Irresistible to try to capture!
