Despite heavy rains, the Calcasieu Lake Marine Debris Marking and Mapping Program enjoyed a successful day Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, near Lake Charles, La. Area volunteers and fishermen traveled Big Lake, Moss Lake and West Cove to mark marine debris deposited by Hurricane Rita with orange buoys and PVC pipe. Volunteers also collected GPS coordinates on the hazards, which are being mapped by the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The program is funded with a grant from NOAA’s Marine Debris Program. Other project partners include: Lake Charles Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), LSU AgCenter, Sempra Energy, Lake Charles Pilots, Lake Charles Power Squadron, Ship to Shore Co., Capt. Sammy Faulk, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Stine Lumber and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. More information is available online at www.laseagrant.org/debris.
