Evangelio según San Mateo 13,24-30.

Y les propuso otra parábola: "El Reino de los Cielos se parece a un hombre que sembró buena semilla en su campo;

“I want people to know that despite the tragic situation, there’s been a positivity that has come from all of this,” Nicole said. “A new life path has been given us, and we’re going to be moving forward with a lot of momentum. My level of activity will be much more limited, my job as a fitness trainer will be affected.”

Both spoke glowingly of Boston and its people, who have sent them bags of cards and letters, including some from schoolchildren.

“We’ve seen the true spirit of Boston,” Michael said, “and it’s fantastic.”

Western States recovery and Vermont 100 preview

......................
.

It has been two weeks since I finished the Western States 100. My recovery has gone very well, even though I am still tired. The week following the race I ran only 29 miles and this week I put in 45. My running streak is still alive. I actually was able to start running the day after finishing the race and have been able to stay injury free enough to run every day since. As of today my streak stands at 195 days and 2118 miles.

Since I have never run more than one 100 mile race a year I have found myself in no-mans land as far as anticipating how to handle the 3 weeks in between these races. Coach Jack laid out a program for me that called for very easy running the first week, more miles including a few specific work outs this week, and then a very light week next week before the race. I have no idea how ready I am.

The last few days I have found myself looking forward to my daily run, so that's a good sign that I'm healing up. But today I ran 16 miles and found myself very stiff and sore as early as mile 12.

I have also been tormenting myself trying to figure out what shoes I'm going to wear at VT. The course is 70% hard packed dirt roads which might as well be pavement. I am torn between the fantastic fit of the Altras that I wore at WS vs. trying to use my Hoka Combi XT's with the Herman Munster protective sole. The Altras fit way better, but they are way firm and I'm afraid of what that will do to my feet later in the race. The Hokas are way more cushy, but they don't fit nearly as well and are very warm.

Today, in an effort to try to figure out what to do, I wore my Hokas. If I do wear them I plan on taping my toes and feet to see if I can compensate for the less than perfect fit. Last night I took a while and taped my feet using Kinesio tape. Here is what they look like
.

.

I did the two feet different ways in order to see which way would feel better. The left foot I taped the entire toe then trimmed off the excess on top. The right foot I used narrower tape and left the tops of the toes exposed. I used one 2" wide strip on the bottom of my feet to see how I might prevent some of the deep blisters that I get in the folds of my feet long into a 100 mile race. Then I put on my Drymax Trail socks and Hokas to see how it all worked together.

This all WAY overkill for a 16 mile run, but I just wanted to test ride the complete setup to see how it felt. I also made sure to try to duplicate the course as closely as possible, so I set out on the hilly dirt back roads to simulate VT. Here are a couple of pics.

Overall, the shoes worked well as did my taping job. I did get a little bit of weirdness in the back of my right foot near the end. I don't think I'm used to all that squishyness. So, I'm torn what to do. At this point it looks like I'll start with my tried and true Altra Instincts and then swap to the Hokas if my feet get really sore.

One of the goals that I set for myself for this year was to break 20 hours in a 100 mile race. This was before I decided to do the Potentially Painful Summer. I can't help but look to VT to be the only realistic place to try to accomplish this goal. If I am healed up enough I'm going for it. If I fall apart, then that's ok. My next goal is to try to get a sub 24 hour buckle at each of the races. I've done VT twice and both times got that buckle. But I have never done it three weeks after a 100 mile race.

None of that stuff really matters when I go back to the purpose of taking on such a big challenge. My goal is to document the process of trying to do something that you don't know if you can accomplish. I am really looking forward to whatever next weeks adventure brings.

The photo of a stunned, bloodied woman in a shredded red shirt went viral after the Boston Marathon bombings, and became a symbol of the city’s horror and shock. On Friday the woman in the photo, Nicole Gross of Charlotte, N.C., was released from Brigham and Women’s Hospital after spending 3½ weeks recovering from serious leg injuries and damage to her ear drums.

Sitting with her husband, Michael, in her hospital room, Gross looked and said she felt like a different person than the one in the photo. “We were fortunate to experience Patriots Day, and the energy surrounding the event was amazing,” said Gross, 31. “It ended in tragedy, but it doesn’t take away the beauty that we saw.”

On April 15, the couple was standing near the finish line with Nicole’s sister Erika Brannock, waiting for the women’s mother to finish her first Boston Marathon. Brannock lost her left leg above the knee in the blast and remains hospitalized.

Michael Gross, who was taking photos, was hospitalized overnight for scrapes, burns, and lacerations to his arms. “In fact, another piece of asphalt fell out today,” he said with a slight smile.

Remembering the Marathon bombing victims

Wearing a mint-green sweatshirt and knee-length pants that revealed heavily bandaged and stitched legs, Gross sat with her arm linked through her husband’s. They both wore “Boston Strong” and “Brigham and Women’s Strong” bracelets. Her husband, who spent every night in a chair next to her bed, reminded her to keep her legs elevated. She suffered two breaks in her left leg, a nearly severed Achilles tendon in the right, and some hearing loss.

“I have to relearn how to walk,” said Gross, who was taken directly from the Brigham to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown. “I’ll put one step in front of the other, one day at a time.”

A champion collegiate swimmer, triathlete, personal trainer, and coach, Gross credits her fitness with her recovery.

Her husband agrees. “It’s the mindset of a competitive athlete,” he said. “You spend many hours in very rigorous training, and that’s how we’re approaching this [recovery], as well. It’s another hurdle to jump over.”

His wife nodded. “Another marathon.”

Michael Gross, who will be 33 Sunday, is general manager of the Charlotte Athletic Club, where Nicole is a personal trainer. In 2010, she did the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii — swam 2.4 miles, rode 112 miles, ran 26.2 miles — with a stress fracture. She was one of the top finishers in her age group.

Though they did not want to talk about the bombings, the couple spoke of how their lives have been changed.

They’ve also received lots of support from friends, clients, and strangers in Charlotte, who started a fund-raising drive for them (bestrongstaystrong.net). Cadie Jessup hired Nicole as her swim coach after she lost her left leg in 2009 to complications of a blood clot.

“Nicole just took me under her wing and made me feel comfortable and I got my confidence back,” said Jessup, who works at Wells Fargo Bank in Charlotte. “She believed in me when many people didn’t.”

Gross coached Jessup through her first triathlon, seven months after Jessup got her prosthetic leg.

Just after the bombing, Gross, from her hospital bed, had a favor to ask her client. Would Jessup, who had done so well after losing a leg, meet with Nicole’s sister, who had just lost hers?

“That connection with Cadie is definitely meaningful for me,” Gross said Friday. “It’s something I can use as a way to help my sister get back. She has a long road ahead of her.”

Erika Brannock, 29, is a pre-school teacher in suburban Baltimore. The sisters, in different Boston hospitals, nonetheless have spoken to each other by telephone most days.

“FaceTime is a beautiful thing,” said Gross. “My sister is amazing. She’s so strong. She helps me get through my dark times.”

Both of them, she said, are proud of their mother, Carol Downing, who was blocks from the finish line when the bombs went off. “At 57, to qualify for Boston, that’s pretty outstanding,” said Nicole, who was her mother’s marathon coach.

Despite what happened at their first Boston Marathon, Michael and Nicole Gross remain fans and hope to return for another. Over the years, they have traveled to dozens of races and marathons, none of them quite like Boston.

“Nothing matches what this city does,” said Michael. “It’s a big party. Nothing else compares to the spirit and the support the runners receive. The Boston Marathon is just amazing.”

This is a video I made for Fergie's new song, Pick It Up, released on the Japanese re-release of her album, The Dutchess.
Great song.

Lyrics:

The sun didn't come up today
This lonely won't go away
It somehow feels
Nothing's real
Like a stranger wears my face

I Pick Up and call
I Pick Up and call
Cause I need to try
I Pick Up and call, yeah

I feel you missin' me
Is there something that you need
Cause we got more babe
Then you know
And this water's runnin' deep

You pick up and call
You pick up and call
'Cause you need to talk
You pick up and call, yeah, yeah

I Pick Up and call
She picks up and calls
We pick up and call
'Cause we need to talk, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Call me on my phone girl
Anytime you want girl
Seven in the mornin'
Pick it up you know I will
Baby ain't no wrong time
For you to call up my line
You stay on my mind girl
You stay on my mind lady
Nothing really matters
When we sit and chatter
Your voice is just like magic
baby, abracadabra,
you put a spell on me
Yeah girl you done that voodoo
So won't you dial up my digits
So I can talk to you
And I Pick It Up, I Pick It Up
Pick It Up, I Pick It Up (x 15)

(spoken)
It's crazy,
How it's so hard for me to just, call you
It's like I have these feelings, but
Someone just keeps, holding me back
I don't know what it is, it's like my insecurities, my fears
I just gotta know, that your gonna be there

I feel you missin' me
I know you missing me
Cause I've been missin' you
Baby it's true, it's true, it's true
I know your wantin' me
Just call and talk to me
To know your needin' me
Like I need you, I need you, I need you

Ever since I was a baby girl I had a dream
Cinderella theme
Crazy as it seems
Always knew that deep inside that there would come that day
But I would have to wait
Make so many mistakes
I couldn't comprehend
As I watched it unfold
This classic story told I left it in the cold
Walking through an open door that led me back to you
Each one unlocking more of the truth

I finally stopped tripping on my youth
I finally got lost inside of you
I finally know that I needed to grow
And finally my mate has met my soul

[chorus]
Finally
Now my destiny can begin
Though we will have our differences
Something strange and new is happening
Finally
Now my life doesn't seem so bad
It's the best that I've ever had
Give my love to him finally

MMMMMMMM

I remember the beginning you already knew
I acted like a fool
Just trying to be cool
Fronting like it didn't matter
I just ran away
And on another phase
Was lost in my own space
Found what its like to hurt selfishly
Scared to give of me
Afraid to just believe
I was in a jealous, insecure, pathetic place
Stumbled through the mess that I have made

Finally got out of my own way
I've Finally started living for today
I finally know that I needed to grow
And finally my mate has met my soul

[chorus]
Finally
Now my destiny can begin
Though we will have a our differences
Something strange and new is happening
Finally
Now my life doesn't seem so bad
It's the best that I've ever had
Gave my love to him Finally

MMMMMMMM

Finally, Finally

Finally
Now my destiny can begin
Though we will have our differences
Something beautiful is happening, happening
Finally
Now my life doesn't seem so bad
It's the best that I've ever had
Give my love to him finally

Ohhhhhhh, Finally, Finally, finally
