HDR Experiment #1 - [Explored 12/21/2012]

Let me first say that I did not take this photo. This image was provided by Brian Koprowski (Brian Flickr) as part of an experiment to see how people would edit the same 3 RAW files differently. You can read more about the experiment here: OutofChicago.

Good idea, Brian!




Anyway here is my submission.

This was my workflow:
Three RAW images were imported into lightroom. I immediately made a virtual copy of each image and did my best to split them so that there were shorter exposure intervals between each shot. I edited each shot so that it had similar contrast and clarity.

Next I bumped the purples and the reds in each of the middle three images. I think my favorite part of his picture was the subtle colors in the buildings and the shoreline.

After that it was off to HDR Efx with all six images. I used a homemade preset to edit this into HDR.

When that was complete I ran it through "define" to reduce some noise and then did some slight distortion clean up in Lightroom.

Why are my blog titles getting so long? Sorry about that... I guess with one post per day, sometimes there is a lot to squeeze in!

So, a few days ago I received a letter from the Smithsonian saying that I have another one in the running for the 6th Annual Photo Contest! Cool! Two years ago, I had 2 winners in the 4th Annual Photo Contest , and one of those ended up hanging in the Smithsonian castle in DC. I know a few of you out there got to see it on road trips - maybe we can make another pilgrimage this year!. I didn't win anything last year in the 5th annual contest... It was a bad year for me, what can I say?

The one that is in the finalist pool this year is the Times Square one that I have placed above. Just below that, I have placed a NEW photo of Rockefeller Center that I have been working on over the weekend. I hope you like it.

I will be speaking in Austin, Texas next week at the Digital Photography SIG on Thursday night, Feb 26 (next week). It's free to come - please do - I'd be happy to meet you in person! I'll be talking about photography and going through a tutorial. If you are in Central Texas, be sure to stop by -- it should be a good time!

Also, over the weekend, I was interviewed at the Pro Photography Show, which is a podcast that should be made available in the next few weeks. I will be sure to put a link to it here whenever it goes live.

Below is an excerpt from my travel blog. Cheers.

Australia's most iconic rock glows at sunset. It's a spectacular sight to behold. It made the 6 hour drive, 4 hour plane ride to Alice Springs and 15+ hour plane ride to Australia worth it. The rock really is in the middle of nowhere.

I caught the landmark at sunset in the above photo. I had one night there and unfortunately there were no clouds in the sky to backdrop the rock. Uluru's perfect moment (clouds or no clouds) is just as the sun falls below the horizon and the monolithic rock is the only piece of land that catches the suns falling rays. It's at this moment that you capture some crazy colors in the sky. I applied a magenta filter here to magnify the beautiful hues in the sky. The rock looks radioactive doesn't it?

I like taking similar photos of the same subject at different times of the day. Same with this photo. I already posted a sunset photo, and this one was taken around lunch. The difference in colors is stunning.

2. The number two hack for Flickr is a newer one and was released earlier this month by Intel's Eric Appel and is called SmartSetr. One of the annoying things about Flickr is that when you want to create a set you must do it manually. Even with batch tools this gets tedious and having to add every new photo to a set every single time sucks. So Eric developed SmartSetr. SmartSetr allows you the ability to build sets that are organized around the concepts of tags, dates, and other metadata associated with a photo.

If, for instance, you want to build a set called Neon Days and Neon Nights (like I did) that holds all of your photos of neon signs, by building a SmartSet you can simply tell flickr to add any photo tagged neon to this set. Although SmartSetr isn't dynamic, Eric refreshes your sets for you once a day and things get updated. It's also really cool that you can organize your set by interestingness, so that your best photos show up first in the set -- something you can't do on Flickr. More from Eric directly.

What a place this is. When I first entered, I thought it was endless. The rows of pillars just repeat into the distance. It's just stunning. And as I was there quite late (around 7 o'clock) it was completely empty. Just me and my camera. It was also a great place for HDR. If you look at the before/after comparison, you will see that the bottom part was quite dark, with the ceiling brightly lit. A perfect example to when to use HDR.
