Florida law enforcement operation nets 48 pedophiles and sexual predators www.privateofficer.com

A statewide law enforcement effort targeting pedophiles netted 48 suspects over the past six months, and authorities said the merger of two state agencies will only mean more arrests in the future.
The announcement of the arrests heralding the end of Operation Amalgamate was made Thursday morning at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement headquarters in Tampa. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi took part.
"Sexual predators are everywhere," she said.
Among those charged: a Transportation Security Administration worker, a church treasurer and a teacher's aide. They came from as far away as Colorado and as close as Tampa.
"It's a sad reality of the society we are living in in this country," Bondi said. "In
Florida, all we can do is lock them up, for life, if possible."
The arrests include those who downloaded computer images of child pornography to those arranging meetings with children for sex.
Bondi said the operation was the first one undertaken after the Attorney General's Office's Child Predator Cyber Crime Unit merged with the FDLE's Computer Crime Center. There are some 25 investigators fanned out across the state. They monitor chat rooms and social media sites and investigate complaints of inappropriate cyber conversations between children and others.
"I'm pleased that this unit is ridding our streets of these predators," she said.
FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey said the operation opened 100 cases, which resulted in the 48 arrests. All of the defendants were arrested independently of each other, and no child pornography rings were broken up, he said.
Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy, also a director with the Florida Sheriff's Association, said that since 2010 more than 250 suspects have been arrested on child-sex charges, and that's due to a number of reasons. Law enforcement is more knowledgeable in computer crimes, and parents and children are more aware of the dangers that can lurk on the Internet.
"This is the 800-pound gorilla that is coming after our little girls and boys," he said.
While law enforcement can do its part, it's the education for children and parents that is key, he said.
Schools are offering courses in how to detect danger online, he said, and parents are monitoring more and more what their children are looking at on computers and cellphones.
Special Agent Supervisor Mike Phillips of FDLE's Computer Crime Center said that education is paying off.
"Kids are now telling predators online that they are not interested," he said, and even alerting parents and law enforcement in some cases.

James Michael Briggs, 50, Fort Myers; two counts of computer pornography, one count of unlawful use of a two-way communication device.
Gene Hamilton Brown, 50, Cantonment; three counts of child pornography.

FDLE Arrests 48 in Child Computer Sex Crimes Investigation

Three of the men arrested in this six month sting are from Tallahassee and one is from Wakulla County.
Two other men on the list were arrested in Leon County, but actually travelled here from other cities.
The Tallahassee arrests were announced back in October by the Tallahassee Police Chief.
Mike Phillips with FDLE's Computer Crimes Center stresses that Dustin Calloway, Zachary Coons and Jason Jarrell are not accused of any new crimes and do not face any new charges. He says they were included in this list because they were caught as a result of the combined efforts of agents from FDLE and Attorney General's Office.
"It wasn't one part of Florida, south or north. It was the entire state where we were making arrests and the only way to combat an issue like that is to have a collaborative effort," FDLE Spokesman Keith Kameg said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested 48 child predators as part of a six-month investigation known as Operation Amalgamate. The investigation began in July after Attorney General Pam Bondi and FDLE merged the FDLE’s Computer Crime Center and the AG’s Child Predator Cybercrime Unit to more effectively investigate online child exploitation.
The merger created specialized units within FDLE focused on investigating internet sex crimes against juveniles.
“The arrests in Operation Amalgamate show the strength of what has become one team with one goal – to find and arrest internet predators attempting to victimize our children,” said Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey. “Thanks to General Bondi’s leadership, the merger has allowed FDLE to expand its squads statewide.”
"We are committed to protecting our children from cybercrimes, and I commend the law enforcement community for their continued dedication to stopping these criminals from exploiting our children," stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Operation Amalgamate investigators found child sex predators in chat rooms, utilizing instant messaging, texting, dating sites, social networks and even online classified ads. FDLE agents in partnership with local law enforcement agencies arrested 48 suspects in 17 Florida counties.
“Operation Amalgamate clearly demonstrates a successful collaboration between local and state law enforcement to address this serious issue,” said President of the Florida Police Chief’s Association and Tampa International Airport Chief of Police Paul Sireci.
In addition to the arrests, FDLE assisted with nine local operations working with the Florida Sheriff’s Association, the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and others. FDLE also provided computer crime investigative training to more than 700 law enforcement officers and computer safety training for thousands of Florida citizens.

Are any of these in jail tonight? If they go to prison, how long? My impression is they should be in prison until 70. Let them dig ditches, make license plates, do anything but get out of prison. They never can be rehabilitated, face it.
