So I recently found out that one of my photos made it on Explore...eh that's cool. For some reason I'm not really on the mood to celebrate it but I just want to say thank you guys for making it your fav =)...check out my explore set...the one that made is the carnival ride..
So yesterday my family and I went out to celebrate my dad's birthday. We went to a japanese resturnant (I LOVE SUSHI) but I didn't eat because I wasn't hungry..ahhh I hate that feeling..
Anyways, I tried my best to avoid taking beach shots but I was tempted because the clouds and the sunset draw me in..lol...i'm weak, i know but I did took a lot of bokeh shots and long exposures. Just in case =), I'll probably post it on facebook.
This picture made me laugh and at the same time made me feel sorry for the baby coconut tree because many people use it to hang their clothing. Poor thing....

These were taken in the mid-1930s in Phoenix, Arizona, when my grandma was in her early 20s. The backdrop is a painted scene of palm trees and saguaros.
My Grandmother's name was Mayna Gilmer and she died in November of 2007.

A Short Tribute To My Aunt, My Other Mother...
My aunt dorothy. 1905--1972. If one looks carefully, the framed picture holds a photo I sent her while I was overseas in USN. The coat belongs to my Uncle. My aunt was almost always cold and often wore one of my Uncle Jim's jackets or shirts as she went about her day.
Aunt Dort never learned to drive. Neither her mother or dad or sister ever drove a car. When she was growing up, she obviously walked everywhere until she began high school sometime around 1917. As a youth who spent much time with my aunt, I recall the long walks we took when she needed groceries that were not available from one of two neighborhood groceries only a few blocks from home. For whatever reasons, she would not purcase meat products from either of the small grocery stores, thus we walked about three miles to what was a community called Fairmount where there was a Supermarket.
We walked the railroad tracks to and from the small town of Fairmount. It was not until after I began high school that a television came to live with us. My uncle traded a beautiful green 1938 Pontiac two door for a black and white television. My aunt never lost her fascination for television and made it a special event to watch I Love Lucy and Lawrence Welk. Looking back on those years, I am glad we did not have television early on; they bought me a radio for my room and every evening I sat up on a high bar stool in front of my radio placed on top of an encyclopedia case filled with fairly recent encyclopedias published in 1939.
My entertainment was the Lone Ranger, Gangbusters, and a few other other classic programs that had not yet become classics. Sky King was another good one. The sound effects and the stories intrigued me and helped me to create illustrations within my mind as I listened.
My aunt was a very special lady, indeed. Throughout my elementary school days, she would fix me toast and hot chocolate with a bowl of Wheaties before sending me off to school. When I think about her, I always remember how sweet and gentle she was, never one to raise her voice though she must surely have had many reasons to discipline me for antics not consistent with her values. When she learned that I was drinking beer while in high school, she never understood how I could rationalize that it was okay. Of course, it wasn't okay.
Her wisdom and kindness, two of her many virtues as a little woman who was hardly five foot tall. If I had it to do over, I would wait until I was out of school and on my own before drinking beer. That would have pleased her.
My New Toy

I couldnt help it, I saw it on Saturday and fell in love. The saleman said "Would you want to hold it and see how it feels ?" I know I should have said no then but it looked so darn good. Once I had it in my hands I knew I had to have it " Ill go home and have a think about it" I said. Today I gave in and went back and bought it. I still plan on using my little Sony for macros (until I get a macro lens) but look forward to playing with my new toy.

My winning rugby photo

Yesterday, on January 18th 2013, this rugby photo won an important local prize: it's the official Deventer 'Sportsphoto of 2012' (Deventer sportfoto van 2012). I received the prize in a crowded theatre Deventer Schouwburg. Four other photos were also nominated for the prize, but my photo had the most votes from the public, mostly rugby fans from all over the country.
Soon the photo will be printed on huge-sized outdoor canvas: 3 x 6 meters (118 x 236 inch) and hanged on the wall of the local sports-centre De Scheg.
I am very proud and happy with this prize and recognition as a local (sports) photographer. Thanks goes to photographer Rob Gommans for his help with this photo.

I was driving along Lake Superior on the scenic drive between Duluth and Two Harbors MN. and I saw this. After driving by I slid to a stop and backed to the entrance of the resort right across the street and pulled in. I grabbed my camera (left the car running! ;-) ran across the street, waded in snow over my boots and took a series of shots. Aren't photographers an odd bunch?

My Face Tells A Story of An eager man

My face tells a story of a.. is a self portrait project. I tried to tell 25 different type of stories though 25 diffident face expression.
Used a simple table lamb as a light source, camera Canon 5D markII with 50mm canon lens. Plugged the Camera to live pc mode, took the photos like a studio. Changed a little bit with the white balance in Camera raw.

The bulbs are now merrily blooming in my garden (and so are the weeds)and I have taken a stack of photos but have not had the time to post them lately. I planted about half a dozen black tulips in autumn and they are now flowering, so are the ranuculars, anenomes and various other bulbs.

Yes, there are lots of receipts in there - but I keep them in my wallet and I didn't self-censor any feminine products because I only carry them when I need them. Maybe in a few weeks I'll take a new picture. :P
Update: I just realized, my book is usually in there too, but since I was reading it in the office, it's on my desk. Imagine a paperback copy of Coalescent by Stephen Baxter in there.

My first camera

When my father died earlier this year, he left us with a large quantity of medium format and 35mm slides. I am currently cleaning his archive out and am scanning the family photos. That's what I found yesterday: the first known photo of me with a camera (photo by Wolfgang Schoeberlein, approx. 1973)

The slippers I'm wearing were part of my grandmother's collection of Maidu (and other native American) artifacts. Many of her items, including the moccasins, were made for her especially, by her good friend Lizzie Enos, one of the last Maidu people to live in tradtional ways. "Grandma Lizzie" made the cradleboard for our family. We didn't ride around in it hanging from someone's head, but sometimes were strapped in and propped up for safekeeping.
The moccasins are now in the "Pate Collection" of Native American artifacts associated with the Placer County Museum. I went to see it, once. It was weird, seeing the slippers I wore around Grandma's house on vacation and at Christmas sitting on a museum shelf. I thought, "How can anyone use them there? That's silly."
(The headboard was used by many children. These were the fifth and sixth in this family, and the first shared it, too. I think it was made specfically for our family, as a gift from Lizzie Enos to my mother or grandmother, but I'm not positive.)
(Addendum: In the Pate Museum, these slippers are identified as coming from Plains Indians, so I'm not sure about the story I heard.)
